When I watched the movie Sankofa, I learned that you can never take anything in life for
granted and to be thankful for the simple things we as a society have freedom to do. It opened
my eyes on how blacks were whipped, beaten, and lynched to death on a slave plantation,
in addition to slaves doing wrong and disobeying the slave system would result in more brutality
from their slave masters. I would mostly consider myself as a nativist because I was born
American in the U.S. but also of African descent.
As well all of my aunts and uncles on my mother and father side were all born in Miami,
FL. My maternal grandmother was born in Ashburn, Georgia. My maternal grandfather was born
in Miami, FL. My paternal grandmother was born in Dothan, Alabama and my paternal
grandfather was born in Georgetown Exuma, Nassau Bahamas. My side of the family which
includes my mother, father, brother, and sister have all originated from Miami, FL. In the
beginning of the movie the meaning Sankofa connected with me because in life we cant always
dwell in the past we have to keep moving into our future so there can be room for success.
In the middle part of the movie Shola is wandering in the dungeon castle filled with slaves
shipped to the U.S. and is captured to only be stripped of her clothes, chained, and whipped
correlated with me because in reality we dont stop and think that it
