The theory and a small introduction on it
– (my understanding) – Mass society theory states that the mass media is a very strong portal for communicating to the masses, as whatever is portrayed through the media channels has a significant influence on the masses. Thus the mass media is a powerful instrument in moulding society. This is partly related to the fact that since the mass media communicates to not just the individual but also his peers, peer pressure also adds to the effectiveness of the communication.
– Why was this theory chosen?
– although mass communication is generally believed to be tougher than individual communication, this theory illustrates that. mass communication is actually a lot more effective. It also helps understand that communication is not received in isolation but that the peers around an individual also affect his reception of the message.
– Illustrate the concept behind the theory by giving a few real life examples.

– mass suicide effect (when a celebrity commits suicide or when any suicide is highlighted on the mass media, the suicide rate increases )
