This is an interesting question. If I were to come back from an exam and ask that question, would I be able to ask questions I might not have ever asked myself? What I am currently working on does not include:the following questions:

Index/Social IssuesPlanned Parenthood Within WisconsinPlanned Parenthood Within WisconsinPlanned Parenthood Federation of America is one of the largest providers in affordable health care for men, women, and teenagers in the nation along with the largest sex education provider in the nation. Their overall mission is to provide “the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility…”, regardless of who they are or where they may come from. The matter of the fact though, is that there have been recent attempts to defund this organization throughout states, Wisconsin being one of those states included. This movement is growing and becoming extremely problematic for men and women throughout the states.

The negative effects of more states trying to defund Planned Parenthood Federation of America is appalling. Millions of lower and middle class people will be out of health care that they need. The “597,000 prevented pregnancies” will turn into pregnancies, the “270,000 pap tests and 360,000 breast exams” will be taken away. Then the more than “4.2 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including more than 650,000 HIV tests” will be provided no more if we let this trend continue. In a recent study they found that, “Planned Parenthood Federation of America is sometimes the only available provider for low-income women who need family planning services. ‘In many communities, there are not other health care providers that would be equipped to fill the void created by the prohibition of funding for a qualified, trusted family planning provider.’”

In January, the Family Planning Federation of America (FSA) released a statement, which was very disturbing. It called for defunding Planned Parenthood for just three years while the “public health community, Planned Parenthood, has no reason to oppose this policy.” The statement said, “PTSF has received millions of taxpayer dollars since 1995. To support our organization’s mission, we must keep Planned Parenthood free—and accountable—and to increase women’s access to health care.”

The FSA statement continues,

These findings are alarming, because the family planning industry has spent millions of dollars to promote Planned Parenthood, and we are committed to making sure that is not the case in the future. We are calling on state, federal, and local agencies to ensure that only Planned Parenthood can provide high quality health care for those in need. We do not believe that women should have to carry their babies to the hospital over the counter. Planned Parenthood will not be the only provider that can provide family planning services where women have been told they have to be, so we are calling on state and local departments and the Department of Labor to put their employees first by requiring that all providers have the resources to provide family planning in an affordable and accessible manner.

The New York Abortion Act, the bill signed into law by President Barack Obama in March 2015, also prevents people who have abortions from using Medicaid. Medicaid is primarily a means of addressing the cost of abortions, but states can expand Medicaid by cutting costs, eliminating some program protections, and expanding support for abortion clinics. When it comes to abortion rights, states don’t play the role they do because the law creates more money for Planned Parenthood.

In a recent article and video, the New York Times revealed what it means to know that Planned Parenthood has to work for people’s reproductive health. I would like to thank the following:

A recent Pew Research Center report from the State Budget Office finds that 20 percent of women in the United States were sterilized during their final years of pregnancy or gave birth at one point. Women between the ages of 18 and 24 were 50 percent more likely to have health insurance, including medical insurance, when they gave birth. The researchers found that more than one-third—38 percent—would not be able to pay back their insurance if they weren’t covered. The uninsured rate was also higher and it was 15 times higher for people who were uninsured—which could result in lower overall health care spending.

In 2011, Planned Parenthood became known as the world’s second largest contraceptive provider after CVS. Planned Parenthood’s profits from the company’s operations were about $7 billion, according to a 2013 report. The company sells over 500,000 “gimp” pills for the first time, making it the fastest growing contraceptive delivery system in the country. The company’s profits were the fourth highest in the country after Gilead Sciences and CVS. Planned Parenthood’s profits increased by $4 billion over the years. In fact, they were up 8 percent for 2015 as well, compared to the same period last year.

In 2008, Planned Parenthood launched their second brand, the Maternity Unit, under the slogan “No abortion!” They didn’t have a policy like Medicaid—where they offered women access to reproductive health care for free. I am proud of the fact that they started out as a family planning service provider and expanded. In 2013,

In 2011, Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin voted to defund the family planning provider, which forced five Planned Parenthood health centers to close down, the most recent one in Fond du Lac community. This specific clinic did not provide any abortion services, but it offered birth control, sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, annual exams and breast cancer screenings, and pregnancy tests to over 1,000 patients each year. In February of 2016, Scott Walker signed two bills to forward the movement of republicans to defund this family planning non-profit organization. One of the bills restricts how much Planned Parenthood can be reimbursed for prescription drugs, stripping away an estimated amount of $4 million each year. The second bill would be taking away $3.5 million in government payments because they provide abortions, these two bills will be affecting the 60,000 patients that Planned Parenthood sees annually in Wisconsin, over 60% of those patients are under the poverty line. With these two bills clearly taking away part of the funding, the prices will rise and force the patients to go without the health services that they need, that they deserve.

One bill that could affect Wisconsin to its core, is a bill written by Representative Diane Black in 2015, proposing that “for a one-year period, the availability of federal funds for any purpose to Planned
