Persepolis is Marjane Satrapis memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic revolution. The story tells of her life in Tehran from the age of 6 to 14, which saw the overthrow of the shah regime, the success of the Islamic revolution and the devastating consequences and effects of the war with Iraq. Marjane lives a childhood uniquely entwined with the history of her country. Persepolis shows the human cost of war and political oppression, and Marjane Satrapi demonstrates through several techniques the importance of family and home through these struggles.

Satrapys story highlights the importance of the influence of family and home on a child upbringing. In Marjanes story, her parents Marxist political views influence the way she perceives the Islamic revolution throughout her childhood. Marjanes family and home life are important in giving her a view in life that is not narrow, that pushes the boundaries. This is shown through her parents having their own rebellion at home, by drinking wine and supplying their daughter with posters of western bands, such as Iron Maiden. Her unorthodox upbringing, in the way that she is exposed to western culture and ideas, lead Marjane to question what is going on around her. Without this important influence from marjanes family, she may never have explored in her life and would have just been a regular passive citizen that gets pushed around and restricted by political authority. Family is important in a persons education, and for Marjane, her family put an emphasis on her education. With this Marjane is able to see the power of her family to reject the strictures of the regime and to rebel against its brutality.

Marjanes relationship with her parents and also her grandma are what builds up her character. She gains different skills and pieces of wisdom from each member of her family. She learns the history of her family off her grandma whom she is so fond of. Her family instills in her the importance of never forgetting the memory of the family,
