The book starts out with Mark being a young child who goes through many changes; the most important one is his hearing loss, as Mark gets older he is in a constant struggling to fit in as a normal “hearing “child. From birth all the way to his grade school years Mark was known to be a hearing child but as the years passed the school soon discover Mark could not hear as well as everyone presumed and he eventually went completely deaf. Although Marks parents were both deaf and had grandparents on the mothers side that were both deaf, the doctors still advised against using ASL and really pushed Mark into speech therapy and basically forced the use of hearing aids. This book is extremely valuable in helping people find their voice, especially when they have lost both physical and speech. I absolutely agree with you that people have difficulty understanding what speech is. I’ve found that deaf people just don’t understand what they’ve actually heard before. Mark has also taught us how we can listen harder to keep up with the volume of people we know. If we’re not able to listen to our own voices in a loud and clear way, we don’t get the message that has really been delivered by him. This book has touched a lot of people and my experience with deaf people is one of the most important moments and my experience of hearing the voices that I can remember that have caused it for me has helped so many to realize that we’re not alone. This book and Drolsbaugh’s writings have also served as inspiration for many new friends and family.
