As manager of Sun-2-Shade Things have being going really well except my employees dont seem to be motivated. They are being paid well, but Ive heard some of my employees complain that their jobs are boring. Something has got to change to keep everyone happy and the business prosperous.

Im going to try and motivate my employees by using the Maslows Hierarch of needs theory. According to this theory people have five levels of needs. First weve got biological and physiological which are the basic needs. Second is the safety and security. Third we have the social needs and the need to belong. Finally is the most important which is self esteem and self fulfillment.

First I am going to start at the bottom, by taking a survey to find out exactly what my employees want and need. Not only will this let me see the exact problems, but it will also let my employees know that I really care. Im also going to start an employee of the month where all the employees get to choose the winner. Things will help them build their social needs. Im also going to create department goals which cause them to work as a team.

Finally I am going to challenge them by setting up report boards to show the employees the “numbers”. I would also set goals for each day/week and request they be met, I would reward them if the goals were met. This would make them work harder because now they would be striving to meet the goals and deadlines.

However, Herzberg and McGregors theory is an extension of Maslows theory of motivations. They seem to be based more on the higher needs. Whereas Maslows theory starts with the basic needs, and then goes up each level of need.

My conclusion based on research in the text, I believe that if I can start with my employees basic needs then move up the level we can turn their attitude around. Then once again everyone will enjoy their jobs, and work would get done more effectively.
