I. Factual Summary:
– Greeks used masks at ceremonies and plays to represent Dionysus, the god of wine and festivals. Masks were used in plays to show emotions and the characters feelings, when acting a role or a part in the play. Masks where used in plays for many specific reasons, one reason is that women were not allowed to play part in plays, so in plays men wore masks to play the female roles. Also actors could quickly change masks to play different roles during the play. Mask back then had been made of wood, cloth, and leather and had been beautifully designed. Masks have been designed to have two holes drilled at the right place for the actors to be able to see. Masks are decorated with hair or animal fur.

II. Vocabulary:
The passage written about Greek masks had been written clearly and understandable. There was only one word I had not been able to understand, this word is amplifier, stated in the third paragraph as the title.

To resolve my lack of understanding this word I had use context clues, to try to figure out what the word might mean. Also I tried repeating the word to see if it would give me any clues of what it might mean.

III. Interpretation:
The main point the author had wanted me to understand from this piece was that masks during Greek time period had been used in many amazing, helpful and creative ways. Masks were used to express feelings and emotions through decorative and colorful ways, that today not many people still use to express emotions.

IV. Criticism:
One point in the piece that I agreed to about Greek masks was the masks were made to express emotion and feelings. Masks made it easier for the audience to be able to understand how the actors felt when playing their roles.

One point in the piece that I disagreed strongly too is that women were not allowed to take part of in the plays. Why to make female roles in a play if women are not allowed to take part in it? To make the role of the women come alive and show the real characterizations of a woman, women should play the roles of themselves and not men playing as women behind female masks.

V. Personal Response:
I think this piece is very interesting. It described what the masks were used for in Greek drama and how they were made to express emotions and feelings of actors playing roles in plays. What I found that was very shocking, was that women were not allowed to participate in the plays and that man played the roles of the females.
