Updike’s “a&p”
Updike’s “a&p”
There are several main events that take place in Updikes “A&P.” The first being when the
girls first walked into the A&P wearing nothing but bathing suites. Sammy was in the process of
ringing up the old witchs items knowing that she was a register watcher. He was struggling with
not making a mistake ringing up her merchandise while at the same time taking notice to the lack
of clothing the girls were wearing. Also the fact that he did indeed make a mistake while ringing
her up which meant he had to focus all of his attention on correcting the problem and pleasing
the witch so she could be on her way.
The second main event occurred when the girls came around the corner approaching the check
out lanes. Sammy was hoping they were going to come thru his isle instead of Stokesies isle.
He glanced over at Stokesies isle and noticed that an old fellow in baggy, gray pants had just
stumbled up to purchase four giant cans of pineapple juice. The girls approached Sammys
vacant isle with only a jar of Herring snacks. He was wondering where the money was going to
come from since the only clothing they were wearing were bathing suites. I think he was about
to faint when he noticed that she pulled a folded dollar bill out of the hollow at the center of her
nubbled pink top. I feel at this point he was struggling to keep his composure so that he did not
drool all over
