In dystopian novels, there is usually a character who realizes the society is flawed, and decides to take action. In Incarceron, the two main characters Finn and Claudia realizes that their society is flawed in some way. Finn lives in a prison that is locked up and “alive”. The prison, also known as Incarceron, has two red eyes that watch every movement of the prisoners. Incarceron even has its own forest and is basically a small world. Nothing in Incarceron goes to waste because once someone dies, the remains goes to a place where the body parts are used to create another person. Finn realises how cruel Incarceron is because everyone has to fight for survival. Also, he believes that there is an outside world and that he was once from there because of a dream he had. Claudia is the daughter of Incarcerons warden and lives in a place where everything is set to living in the 18th century. Claudia is also forced to marry Prince Caspar because Prince Giles has died. Everyone thinks that Incarceron is a dystopia, but the prisoners know that only the strongest survive. On page 158, Finn and Claudia first meet through the keys and they begin to trust and tell each other their problems. Since Claudia is the wardens daughter, Finn promises her that he will help her not marry Prince Caspar if she helps him escape. Claudia gladly agrees and on page 326 they start to plan out their plan. In The Giver, Jonas realises how people get “released” and decides to leave on chapter 21. He was always planning to flee, however when he realised that Gabe was going to be released the following day, he hurriedly fled without getting the memories from the Giver. One difference between The Giver and Incarceron is that in The Giver, Jonas flees because of the person he loves while in Incarceron, Finn flees because of curiosity, greed and wanting to belong.
