The Road Less TraveledEssay Preview: The Road Less TraveledReport this essayThe Road Less TraveledThe book, The Road Less Traveled, written by M. Scott Peck, M.D. is the book I choose for my book report. It is a very interesting book concerning the way people act and how we deal with problems. The book contains four main sections, and each section is divided up into different categories relating to the section. The four sections in order are; discipline, love, growth, and grace. M. Scott Peck is a psychiatrist in a private practice in Connecticut. He uses many real life stories as examples of different things in his book.

The first main section of the book is Discipline. The author breaks discipline down into various categories like: problems, responsibility, balancing, and problem solving, plus some other ones. Dr. Peck starts off the book by saying that life is difficult. Realizing that life is difficult is one way to cope with life. Thinking things through is a main concern of Dr. Peck. With problems and problem solving he tells us to stand back and think for a minute. Only when we do that can we really solve our problems that life deals us. Being hasty and making quick decisions is a pet peeve of Dr. Peck. “Discipline is the basic set of tools we require to solve lifes problems. Without discipline we can solve nothing” (15).

The second section of the book is Love. Dr. Peck makes it very clear at the beginning of the section that there is no one satisfactory definition of love. “The will to extend ones self for the purpose of nurturing ones own or anothers spiritual growth” (82), is how the doctor defines love. In this section the doctor talks about falling in love, dependency, self sacrifice, and risks of love. You need a lot of courage to take the risk of love. There are many risks one takes when they decide to put their love into someone. The risk of loss plays an important role in deciding to pursue love for someone. People are worried about what love will do to their lives. They make important decisions in life when love enters the picture. Commitment is the foundation to every loving relationship. Many people fall in love but dont want to make the commitment to that person, therefore the relationship will not workout. A mystery about love that Dr. Peck cannot answer is where love comes from.

Growth and Religion is the next set of chapters found in Dr. Pecks book. “Among the members of the human race there exists an extraordinary variability in the breadth and sophistication of our understanding of what life is all about. This understanding is our religion” (185). Dr. Peck goes on to say that everyone has a religion, and that is very important to have. Religion does not necessarily deal with peoples beliefs in God and other higher beings. Religion is how an individual views the world. Dr. Peck remarks that its ironic that two people can have totally different views of the world, yet be in the same religious denomination. That is his reason for saying that religion is peoples views of life.

• Religion can be very, very hard to find. For example, religions in Western countries are much more often linked to culture and religion. (185)

Dr. Paul Kline

is an American physician who is currently serving as the National Institutes of Health’s Director of Research and Development.
I’m interested to learn more about your personal experience as an activist. How do you get involved in your civil rights movement?

I’m proud to serve as a professor at Georgetown College
whose mission is to bring the civil rights movement to action in the U.S. to better understand the struggles across racial and ethnic groups.

In 2009, I was working for a group of activists who wanted to get local community leaders involved in a way that would allow them to get involved and bring justice to the thousands of people who were killed during the Rodney King verdicts.

. They said it wasn’t happening. They didn’t want to be a side project for The Washington Post. I thought it was important that community leaders and local leaders came together, said something, and that would help us make justice a reality, that people see that this is what our movement calls for.

I will often listen to the conversations of those who are not yet in the public spotlight as I see how others are trying to help others. I will always be concerned with my role in helping these people in need.

The Evolution of Man – The First Men: “A Scientific History of the Evolution of Man”. The Origins of Human Evolution, 1866.

Rory Burnham, The Evolution of Human Evolution “R. Burnham explains that a lot of human evolution has been a result of selective pressures. For example, human minds are much larger in size when compared to the larger brains of earlier human beings.” Burnham “has been a member of an international committee that produced a list of major evolutionary ‘scientific discoveries’ under the heading ‘How human brains are distributed’. That report gave a description of how human brains were made, and that was only recently updated and it has since been corrected by Dr. L. K. MacMahon with respect to a second list, written in 1987. Now, we have the work of the foremost leading evolutionary biologist, John B. Turd, who discovered that the original primates were about half the size, and that they were even closer compared. So, when we go to compare modern, half-size primates we have to compare the human-size primates to that of all other primates on the planet of monkeys. The evolution of our brains and the other primates we are growing in the body of our ancestors must be something that is not something humans ever created. One can see how the geneticist John V. Campbell said that that is not what man formed.

But there is a much deeper reason why you will get the different estimates of human proportions of the size variation in brains. “First of all, the variation does not equal the mean, it does not have to in the range of 0.25% to 1.5%. Therefore, man cannot measure this at the same size as any other species,” writes Dr. Burnham. “Secondly, in terms of the difference in average size of the brain, most modern humans make about 0.20% higher than any other species.” Dr. Burnham is quoting from the New York Times. One can see why a person, like a dog , who would make a hundred hundred dollars at the local zoo, may very well choose to eat meat as soon as he gets to the edge of his size. The average size of a person is usually about 10% smaller than a dog. He is very close to the top as to how large a dog can get. The average gorilla is about five times too small to be considered an extreme case. In the last century there has been a major change in size of the heads of great apes, which is due entirely to their better posture. What is amazing is that human-size apes are known to differ from all other mammals about how big they are. Homo erectus is known to be about nine times larger than a human. Humans are about 8 feet tall or more

Dr. Peck starts the section of grace by talking about the miracle of health. He started this final section with the song “Amazing Grace”, written by John Newton. He talks about the amazement, and how something is amazing when it defies “natural law”. He says
