Political Policies of ChinaEssay Preview: Political Policies of ChinaReport this essayInternational business EnvironmentGlobal Issue PaperIntroductionGrowing up in China, I can remember going to the street markets and bump into everyone, I felt like an ant in a mass colony. Theres no space, the buses are packed, and the bicycle lane resembled a highway during a traffic jam. Getting around was impossible. Much of the urban areas are full of construction, dust is constantly in the air, very uncomfortable. Majority of the population live in Apartment style buildings, usually 2 bedrooms, one bathroom, living room, and an extended kitchen. The family structure usually doesnt separate, so you have grandma, grandpa, kids, mom, and dad. Thats a lot of people under one roof; I know Americans usually isnt comfortable with that. In the rural areas of china, agriculture is the main source of income for most families. These families depend on their land to survive, and the more people to work the land, the more prosperous the family. It is very common to have home births; there is no need to report to government. Chinas enormous growing population has given way to many new problems. Pollution in China gets worse and worse, the growing population produces too much waste for the land to handle. People are poor; China has improved in recent years, but still much behind. China is running out of resources, the large population consumes more than they have. Almost a quarter of Chinas land is desert, no fertility what so ever. There is no chance for people to utilize it. The demand for jobs have increased greatly, even with foreign investment poverty still affects much of the population. I have great concern for the people of China; I do not want to see my people suffer. I believe education is the way, start them early, let children know the consequences that can affect them in the future, their survival is in danger.

Chinas Growing Population and PolicyMao liked children, or at least he encouraged Chinas citizens to have as many as possible. In the early days of the Peoples Republic, Chairman Mao urged Chinese to bear as many children a possible to “make China stronger”. Therefore, over the next 10 years since 1949, Chinas population was increased by another 118 million from 541 million. It continued to rise through the 60s. The government encouraged this so they could help China develop water control and communication infrastructures. They also thought it could help produce more food and strengthen their nations defense. Twenty years later, the millions born during that period contributed to another baby boom. By 1970, there were roughly 830 million Chinese. Population growth would not seem to end until the introduction of the One-child policy in 1979.

Citizen of China | By John W. W. Brouckenback, author: “China: The Age of Capitalism” (1997). (Copyright 2010 Paul S. Zolts, PhD).

In the late twentieth century, China was beginning to be integrated as a major economic power in a developing world like South America. This made China an excellent partner for U.S. imperialist power interests (e.g., France, the United States, and others) in the Asia–Pacific, as well as an ally of America. This included support from Japan and the United States where China’s role as a global market and trading partner is now an important factor of both countries’ post-WWII, multi-front economic relations. As the 1990s turned into the decade of the modern internet, China began to look outside its own borders and began to build up its own power in international relations. From the late 1990s, the government has used its influence to form alliances with many top U.S. players, including Israel, Russia, China, and NATO countries, who are supporting China and building strong regional alliances and economic and military ties. One of its best is the United States, which supported Israel. The United States maintains a very high position with Chinese firms in its strategic partners in the Asia–Pacific region, including Israel and many of its major economies. China in particular has developed a large presence by using its diplomatic relations with countries like India and the Philippines, as well as with Japan, which also participates in those countries’ regional economic policies. When China participates in the Asia–Pacific Economic Leaders’ Meeting on 12 December 1980, the United States was a major influence in that meeting, with its presence there helping to boost American leadership. The main role played by China’s leaders in building the AIIB, though, was the government’s recognition to them and its recognition of their power.

Government has been working closely with the AIIB since 1989 to build up infrastructure to meet the needs for China’s future self-development. During that time, the government began receiving aid from other Chinese agencies and through their participation in the AIIB. As a result of its government’s contributions, China invested more than $100 million ($120 million today) in the AIIB. In 2000, China spent more than $1 billion on roads to reach the goal, and then it developed its first-ever high speed train in 1989. China spent an additional $200 million on new rail connecting China to Vietnam (which is part of the AIIB). China also invested more than $250 million in the construction of a new nuclear fusion plant in 1998. These investments will generate significant resources to enhance China’s economic potential by building and operating large infrastructure and power plants by the end of 2017. This growth, which is projected to be greater than 9% by 2030 and 15% by 2040, will contribute greatly to further enhancing China’s future self-development. The one-child policy is not a law, as most people think it is its a policy enforced by the system of punishments. However there is a Marriage Law introduced in 1980, insisting the practice of family planning. The marriage Law encourages late marriages, late childbirths, and one child per couple. Having one child is really encouraged, uses of propaganda such as posters help very much, also the state controls the media so they get to choose what the public see and hear. The media is the only gateway people have to the world; the government can make sure the media supports and encourages their policies. Government policy is encouraged more so in urban areas rather than in the countryside.

Pregnant women have to be authorized by the government; they then receive birth coupons allowing them to have a child. Women who dont have their births authorized risk being punished by the government. If you follow the policy, rewards can include monthly financial support, extended maternity leave of your occupation, increases land allocation, preferential treatment in education, housing and employment. There can be exceptions to the one child policy; some families have had up to three children without a punishment.

The one child policy affected the population of China greatly, especially the structure. There will be a lot more elderly people due to improvements in medicine and nutrition. There will also be a huge decline in the number of under 18s for obvious reasons
