BackgroundThis business proposal is for a new family owned winery that recently opened up in Hendersonville, NC. The winery has over 15 acres of grapes of both red and white varieties. They currently offer tastings Thursday – Sundays of seven wines for a tasting fee of $7.00 per person. The winery has good size tasting room consisting of a bar with eight chairs as well as three additional four-top tables. In addition, there is a good size outdoor area with about six tables and four chairs to a table. According to the owners, the current plan for the winery is to just get the word out to people that the winery is open and to encourage people to come in for tastings which will hopefully lead to wine purchases. While the winery is in a good location in its proximity to the downtown, depending on people to stop when they see the well-marked sign isnt a guaranteed way to ensure a successful business.

The Winery

The Winery’s $6 per person tasting fee (approximately $4 for two people per person + the 1st person can get double it) will only be raised once the production level is reached.

The total production cost in the last 5 years has decreased by a significant percentage every year since the beginning. The cost of produce per business has been lower than previously estimated, but at a lower rate. This is the result of a combination of economic factors, the economic downturn, a combination of social changes, and government policies. Since our business is not located in a location that is already struggling for money and needs a quick revenue stream, we have decided to do some additional cost savings to encourage the production of our very own winery. This also has the advantage that we can also attract the interest of a growing number of local people who know the Winery, who are excited about the opportunity and want to try it. For this reason we are opening at a time when people are willing to give a little more money and hopefully, a good quality wine.

The Winery

The Winery currently is opening at 12:00PM EST. It may take longer or longer for us to finish the production line, but at that time we anticipate that there will be people over there going into their patio area to check off the tastings, check out the wines that have been released, and for an additional 10 to 15 people to come by for dinner and enjoy the wines.

Other

The other winery in the Hendersonville area, the Pimentel Winery, has been in business for over 15 years. Their $15 per person tasting fee is currently $4 per person ($2 per day and 2 per person + the 1st person can get double it). This is $6 per person and there are a number of additional items to show a high level of professionalism and high quality wines. The Pimentel Winery will also hold tasting events for the local breweries on Saturday, April 7 and Sunday, April 9. The Pimentel Winery will also host live music and make wine glasses and more of their wines available to see.

Business Proposal/Pricing & Non-Pricing StrategiesMy business proposal would be to market the winery to area venues as a way to spread the word about the winery. There a few ways that this can be done. First, there are several wine stores in town that feature many of the NC wines. If one of the owners of Saint Paul winery came to the wine store even once a month for a free two hour tasting, they could surely market and promote their wines. This would also be a great way to market the winerys peaceful and scenic venue as a place to hold small functions. Another marketing concept would be for the winery to host wine tastings at the different area gated HOAs as part of ladies luncheons or other themed events. A third and probably one of the biggest marketing tools would be to host themed events at their winery such “Weekend Wind-down” featuring appetizers and music on Friday nights, etc.

• I would also like to see a venue like the Napoli winery and the South Carolina Vineyard winery as both being good opportunities to hold local community events. It would also make more sense for the winery to offer a wine-friendly atmosphere within the Napoli County, making them look like a destination for locals during the summer months.

• If we go back to my approach to this issue, it would not only be much more direct in terms of the type of events the winery was able to provide in the early part of the game but also how closely it could follow a trend toward more wine focused events. To do that just right, we would have the winery have some sort of wine tasting. It is important for the winery to have some type of wine selection so there are some local ingredients and the wine-focused events the local industry has in store. It would also allow for the winery to add some wines to their wine catalog via some local wine distribution channels such as LocalBrew or local growers like our wine business. I have heard of other wineries like CVS and The Barn selling wines with local or homegrown brands as well? Perhaps we could also try to hold a wine tasting near the Winery for local businesses or restaurants that enjoy a special kind of wine-oriented atmosphere. Finally, while some of these activities would not be as direct as those proposed by the winery, they would make sense and could help bring the local wine industry a step closer to becoming part of the Napoli County wine community.

5:15pm: I am hoping we can start a movement for more independent wine shops. This campaign would make it possible for some independent wineries to buy winemakers or to make similar purchases over the years. RevenueBy marketing to different area venues and getting the word out about Saint Paul winery, revenues should increase within a couple of months. The trend in people visiting wineries is on the wise. Wine tourism is expanding not only in major wine growing countries but also in small regions in the U.S. While it is true that California gets millions of visitors each year and that their numbers are increasing, smaller local regions such as Idaho, Arizona and Virginia have also scene noticeable increases in their local wineries. (Thach, 2007) When hosting events at the gated HOAs, Saint Pauls winery could charge a flat rate to come out and host the tastings as well as bringing wines to sell. At the events held at the winery, again, charging guests a minimal charge to come enjoy the music and appetizers can cover costs as well as generate profits. Offering wines by the glass at these events can also generate revenue. Finally, this winery could increase its operating hours especially since they are a new business and want to be able to attract and draw in as many people as possible.

Costs MinimizationTo keep costs at a minimum, Saint Pauls winery may want to pair with other local small businesses who are trying to advertise their small business. An example would be to work with a local catering company who could provide appetizers for a weekend wind-down event and have brochures or business cards on hand to promote their business. Since it could draw in new business for the caterer, they could offer the appetizers to the winery for little or no costs in exchange for the free marketing opportunity.
