”Something roared like thunder. The earth shook a little and we heard the rat-a- tat-tat of gunfire. “Father!” Hassan cried. We sprung to our feet and raced out of the living room. We found Ali hobbling frantically across the foyer..worried (Hosseini 35-36)

The literary device used in this passage is imagery. Imagery is defined by using images and descriptions to create a mental picture for the reader. The images used in this passage tell us how brutal and gruesome the war was in Afghanistan. The image of the innocent people in their pajamas being woken by the unpleasant noises and gunfire shots serves to illustrate an important description. The description of the war and gunfire along with the soft comfy pajamas are not generally correlated. The image descriptions shows how frightening the war was and how terrified Ali, Baba, Hazzan, and Amir were.

As I read this passage I was able to get a good mental picture of how bad this war was. I feel though as Amir considers this to be the “end” because it was a destruction to his homeland which was a special part to Amirs childhood. He recalled the friendship and memories he and Hazzan had there. I think that this comment Amir has of the “end” will foreshadow other events. For example in chapter 7 when Amir watches Hazzan get raped and how it just leaves the reader hanging. I think the author uses various imagery and descriptions for the reader to think what may happen
