Life of Pi has many themes but one main one that I found to be prominent was religion. This novel starts of with Pi saying, “I have a story that will make you believe in God”. In this book, the author connects storytelling and religion. Pi believes in three religions, Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. These all bring their beliefs and rules to his life which eventually come into play at the end. His family owns a zoo and when they are moving to Canada, their ship gets caught in a storm and is shipwrecked. Piscine gets lucky and is the only one who survives with a life raft, Tiger, Hyena, Zebra, and an Orangutan all with him. At the end, after he has survived for 227 days, 2 men interview him. He tells him the story with all the animals. They ask him if he’s joking and he replies with explaining the whole story. This time Instead, putting humans in the places of the tiger, orangutan, zebra, and hyena. After hes done telling them this he asks them which story they liked better, and they say the one with the animals. Pi goes on to explain that religion is similar to this situation. That there are many but you choose what you think best suits what you like and believe to be true. This theme could be applied to my life in a few different ways. I dont believe in multiple religions like Piscine, but I do believe in Christianity. While Pi believes that you should just choose from one of the religions i believe there is only one way to heaven, which is through Jesus. A common belief that Pi and I share is, that when you choose what you want to believe in, you go for it. When you believe fully and dont look back, you have to commit and be confident in what you believe in.
