Since year 2005, the acquisitions of Thomsen and Alcatel have become a nightmare for TCL, making TCL experience a cumulated net loss of three hundred million for the years 2006 and 2007. Li Dongsheng, the president of TCL was therefore named the “worst boss” by world wealth magazine in year 2008. A lot people became to doubt Li Dongshengs ability to lead such a huge company. Certainly, Li Dongshengs poor performance is the primary reason for TCL’s loss of money.

Basically, effective leaders always share some common qualities. First, as Al Dunlap
correctly pointed out good leaders should always listen to others openly, accept
constructive suggestion and undertake responsibilities. Li dongsheng is such a
tenacious person that he ignored, even didn’t listen to the reasonable suggestions
made by others opposing the acquisition decision. This hasty decision has been
obvious to Li dongsheng’s fault if he had taken the time to consider about others’ suggestions. Not only the acquisition were a completely mess, he still didn’t even acknowledge being responsible for his bad decision.

Second, leaders should always keep in mind that employee satisfaction is beneficial to cost reduction and enhancing working effectiveness. Leaders should have a clear idea that their actions should be consistent with what the employee wishes and what they can do. Therefore, it is often necessary, even desirable, for an effective leader to show some understanding of employees’ concern. Obviously, Li Dongsheng is not a “people-oriented” leader.
