Chemistry: Laboratory Techniques and Measurements
Laboratory Techniques and Measurements, Experiment 1, Nicholas Meyer 9/27/15Purpose: To learn about the Internation System of Units and how it relates to various units of measure as well as become familiar with various types of lab equipment. Procedure: Length Measurements: Use a ruler to measure the various objects and record the data in cm into the chart. Then convert the data to mm and m.Temperature Measurements: Prepare the water to various temperatures and record the data in Celsius. Then convert Celsius to F and KMass Measurements: Estimate the weight of the various objects by guessing. Then weigh them using the scale and record the data in grams. After, convert it in kgVolume and Density Measurements: Using the techniques from the first and third parts of the experiment, determine the volume and density of the various objects.Displacement Method: Determine the mass of the objects just like before, only this time, place the objects inside of graduated cylinder to see how much the object displaces the water to determine mass.Archimedes Method: Similarly to displacement, use the weight of the displaced water to determine density.Dilution: Calculate the initial concentration of a solution of sugar water. Then continue to dilute it down more and more and calculate the concentration with each dilution.Data Tables and Observations:Length MeasurementsObjectLength (cm)Length (mm)Length (m)CD11.9119.119Key5.252.052Spoon16.9169.169Fork17.5175.175Temperature MeasurementsWaterTemp (C)Temp (F)Temp (K)Hot from tap45113318.15Boiling100212373.15Boiling for 5 min100212373.15Cold from tap2169.8294.15Ice water (1 min)642.8279.15Ice water (5 min)642.8279.15
