Diamonds are not only a girls best friend but they are also the king of gemstones. The name diamond refers to its hardness. It originates from the Greek word adamas, which means the unconquerable. There is nothing that can compare to a diamonds hardness. A diamond is truly forever. Throughout history many diamonds have been discovered, some diamonds of better quality than others. Diamonds have been treasured as gemstones since their use as religious icons in ancient India. Their usage in engraving tools also dates to early human history. Popularity of diamonds has risen since the 19th century because of increased supply, improved cutting and polishing techniques, growth in the world economy, and innovative and successful advertising campaigns.
There are diamonds that have been found, that are very famous. Some of which are now part of the crown jewels. The Crown Jewels are the regalia and vestments worn by the sovereign of the United Kingdom during the coronation ceremony. The Crown Jewels are displayed at the Jewel House in the Tower of London and can be viewed there by the public.
The Great star of Africa also known as the Cullinan I is a 530.20 carat gemstone. It is the largest cut diamond in the world. It was cut from the largest rough diamond ever found of 3106 carats (Gemstones of the World by Walter Schuman Pg. 94). It adorns the scepter of the English kings insignia. The Cullinan diamond was found by Frederick Wells, surface manager of the Premier Diamond Mining Company. The stone was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine. The stone was bought by the Transvaal government and presented to King Edward VII on his birthday.
The Centenary diamond is a 273.85 carat that was found in the Premier Mine. It is the cut by master-cutter Gabi Tolkowsky and took almost three years to complete. It is the worlds largest, most modern cut, top color and flawless diamond. It has 247 facets (
