Their love and concern for each other remains strong and constant throughout the play, but their relationship changes dramatically following the murder of King Duncan in Act 2.

The Macbeths’ relationship is presented in very strong terms in Act 1 by virtue of their sense of togetherness and resolve when separated by war and when placed under enormous pressure and temptation by the Witches’ prophesies. Macbeth’s initial reaction to the prophesy of his future kingship in Act 1, scene 3, is skepticism and disbelief: “Say from whence/You owe this strange intelligence? or why/Upon this blasted heath you stop our way/With such prophetic greeting?”, but this changes to amazement and wonder when he hears from Ross about his promotion to the Thane of Cawdor, in the same scene, and he immediately thinks about using bloody means to become king: “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical,/Shakes so my single state of man”, but as this quotation also shows, he is afraid of its treasonable implications.

But does he, like his father, have a prophetic nature? In the story of his childhood, Macbeth is often portrayed as a dark figure; he seems to have an interest in the realm of the good, so that one of his companions (the King) tells him,

[a story of dark men and darkness that has occurred to us for ages] “I’m not your father, but your brother. Be patient, and it behooves you to look before my face!”

But when the king shows him the portrait of Macbeth in Act 2, we see that the painter’s sense of fate is very different from his own: he says to his father,

“You see that I fear the worst; the devil and those who will bring about my downfall.”

Then the same image shows in the “Mulatt” of the Tetragrammaton, and, as such, it is quite clear that when he speaks of the “devil and those who will bring about my downfall”, he’s not trying to make Macbeth think bad or evil, but rather is saying what he knew well, and in fact is saying what his father wanted him to say. In the case of the painting that emerges, Macbeth seems to feel something of this strange aspect to his subject’s perception of fate. But the work’s very first sentence says something less than very different and a lot less clear.

How could Macbeth’s perspective on his own fate be different from his own perspective? He cannot talk about it openly with his face exposed in Act 3. Instead he reveals his own history, of course, and has only a very vague and indistinct notion about what he saw or heard, or even what he is doing with his hands and feet. His eyes seem to be closed for a period of some time for fear that he will lose control (for his “mood is not like this” explanation, the person is so frightened he cannot see the person outside his gaze), which is just what the painting says.

The reason (though it was not his own that was at fault for this, as I have already discussed in Part VI of this essay), is that Macbeth was afraid of what his father might think about him, and feared some of his own actions (although he was afraid of some actions that may have taken on a more evil character).

The artist is quite clear about his own fears, and so the portrait of Macbeth that emerges in Act 1 is an absolutely remarkable picture—an exquisite representation of the fearlessness that many people experience. It’s a powerful way to paint a portrait that is at one time or another clearly defined. The painting is not just a painting, it’s a piece of art. The way it conveys the fears and difficulties that often surface in people’s lives is a bit of a problem.
