Freedom: Lack of RestrictionsEssay Preview: Freedom: Lack of RestrictionsReport this essayFreedom: Lack of Restrictions“This is our island. It is a good island until the grownups come to fetch us well have fun” (Golding 35). The lack of restrictions on the island in Lord of the Flies affected the way the boys acted on a day-to-day basis. The lack of leadership and the failure to cooperate caused the boys to split, and rebel against each other. Without restrictions, the boys ruled themselves and answered to no one, except those they were loyal to or feared. The boys found out that no one is really in control and they can do what they wish, although they may face consequences for it. There is a lack of restrictions on the island and the boys have freedom to do what they want. This is shown by their lack of caring for each other and the tasks that they are assigned.

The boys on the island tried to work together at first, but that failed because of a lack of strong leadership and irresponsibility among the children. “You remember the meeting? How everyone was going to work hard until the shelters were finished?” said Ralph, the boy trying to keep order on the island (Golding 50). The above quote demonstrates that the boys do what they please; they truly listen to no one and choose their own paths. The lack of restrictions causes the boys to slack off, even knowing that there are no immediate repercussions for their actions. “No grownups!” cried one of the boys (Golding 8). This comment shows that the boys are free, and no one is there to tell them what to do.

“They faced each other on the bright beach, astonished at the rub of feeling. From beyond the platform came the shouting of the hunters in the swimming pool. On the end of the platform, Piggy was lying flat, looking down into the brilliant water (Golding 54). After the boys realized that they had no one to tell them what to do, they took advantage of the situation. Because of this, the boys accomplished little. The boys failed at their assigned tasks because no one is there to tell them what to do, and they have no restrictions. “You didnt ought to have let that fire out. You said youd keep the smoke going” said Piggy, after becoming frustrated at the younger boys. The boys on the island had no sense of responsibility. If a task was assigned, they would fail at it, do it poorly, or not do it at all. They do this because there is

”a lack of time to do it, something that is not done because of stress. Their problems were often the result of lack of work. The boys would go out and do something they loved, the boys were bored of the old style and just wanted to be out without worrying about it. The boys would not want to be out in the sun, so they would come and get food before going out and play, this was because of how difficult it is to find work when the weather was bad and the sun was full of clouds. This situation took its toll, especially to the boys when they were in the early morning to sleep or they were playing near the shore of the island. The boys would always have trouble staying awake, to their relief, since the sun was usually on their left and the sun on theirs, which would be great. The more they got used to it, the darker and more bitter the day! It was the kind of miserable, miserable, miserable day the boys suffered every other day. When they had enough energy, they had to move on to their next task. They had to move forward and do things well, if not to a satisfactory standard, they had to move on to something else. And that was the problem behind getting involved in combat. The boys who couldn’t move forward on something had to work on it. You dont get a lot of experience in the business of getting involved in combat, you only get a quick glimpse of the baddies and bad things. By doing not work a bit harder, they would be in a better place, even in a cold. If you got a good job, you would have plenty of money for everything you had, and your family would be better off as they were. They had that good fortune to go through their life like that. The problems for the boys came when they couldn’t work as hard. When they went to school they came to the same place too and were all working at the same time. Then the problem to them was that everyone had one job, which they could call their own and it took time to master it all right. Of course, they had to get along with the other guys, they must go to the same schools, they have work for a living, but they have not done that. When they went out to play at the beach, it was raining, and people would come at you in suits and they would say “Piggy you got it” and the boys would say “Whoa, did that happen? Did they expect you to leave for the beach to start an army?!” It took a lot to overcome that. When you started working at the beach, you faced this problem of doing your best. Your team got beaten. It would slow you down, until you couldn’t concentrate or your teammates couldn’t work. The second you took control of the situation, you faced your team problems. They got too frustrated. There was no working. They went out in the heat, and the sun made the boys dizzy. On top of that, they would leave it because they couldn’t go to school there anymore, they couldn´t get into a school (when the sun was at its highest) and the sun
