Writing an essay is one of the hardest things to do in a high school student’s life. There are so many mistakes that one can make while writing, which makes it that much more intimidating. Students take more time thinking about what to write down on their blue-lined paper than the actual amount of time it takes to type or hand write the paper. Is the paper topic going to work? Will the teacher accept the number of sentences in the paragraphs? Will the other students laugh when they hear the paper read aloud? It is all very disturbing and daunting to sit at a desk or a computer, to sit anywhere really, and try to think of an essay topic that will be acceptable.

In a box shaped room they sit like caged mice waiting for their instructor to list off the next day’s homework. Will they be lucky and just have to read? Or will the little mice have to do an essay-rough draft due the next day? Will they scurry around at the last minute trying to get as many details as they can, or will they bee good little mice and eat their cheese dinners, and then do the homework ahead of time? Just trying to think of a topic that is good, unique, and attention-getting is hard. Then there are other questions to put into the equation. How are they to keep the other students’ attention? Will the paper be good enough to get an A, or will it sadly sit upon the scratched brown desk with a bright red D in the top corner? These (and more) are items that go through students’ minds when they start to write an essay.

Procrastination is not the key when writing an essay. Sitting in a class room helps a student write to a certain extent. Friends are around; friends are a disturbance when doing homework. They take the attention away from the work that needs to be done. It’s just like small children at a sibling’s birthday party; their brother or sister is getting all of the attention, so they must make a big scene with the party balloons to get attention brought upon them. Procrastination is not something that is wanted, it just pops up like an unexpected friend that comes by while a certain someone is still asleep in bed. Mother being mother lets the little friend wake that certain someone up, and as the certain someone wakes up, the dear unexpected friend gets an eye full of frazzled hair, bleary looking eyes (one half opened, the other is blinded by the mat of hair in front of it). Procrastination is a nasty little item that pops up and does not seem to want to go away. Some may try to push it away by forcing themselves to do their work, others welcome it, hoping that at the last second when their eyes are about to close, before drifting off to bed and going into “La La Land” some magnificent idea will come creeping in to their psyche. Some idea so wonderful that the teacher will be amazed and let the whole class take a field trip to Dairy Queen, teacher’s treat. Though that does sound nice, it will never happen, unless, of course, “La La Land” has something to do with it.
