My Mentor
Life isn’t just merely about living to live, but it’s also about pushing yourself to limits, beyond your comfort level. My mentor Mike has done just that and has succeeded in many aspects of his life. Mike’s life has not always been apples and oranges. As a teenager he wreaked hell leading him to eventually join the Marines to learn an essential human behavior, DISCIPLINE. Due to a knee injury he was unable to continue as a Marine but that didn’t stop him from utilizing the skills that he acquired. He used these newly acquired skills to attract the most precious resource a company can have, humans. By doing so he built a strong network in the industry of promotions. He started at the bottom and worked his way up to management. Below are Mikes thoughts on management.

Question 1: What are the 3 characteristics of a great manager?
Answer: “To be a great manager requires that you lead by example. Do not tell your employees to be on time and then stroll into work half hour late. If your employees see this they will deem it unnecessary to come on time. Sometimes there may be a sign in system to know the time they come in to work. If there is, they may come in on time for the money, but they definitely are not doing it to help the boss”.

Question 2: What type of training was most helpful to you?
Answer: “My training in the Marines taught me discipline, but I’m sure you will not be going to the Marines. Another way to learn discipline is to practice it. If you say you are going to start something finish it. If you have to hand in a paper on a specific date, hand no later than that date. I also think for the marketing industry you should get a lot of people experience. Go to your schools events, join clubs and find various groups to network with.
