The Hunger Games Inciting EventsEssay Preview: The Hunger Games Inciting EventsReport this essayAnnsley LoweMolly ScottEnglish 927 November 2012The Hunger GamesThe Hunger Games had several moments of impact throughout the story line. The author does an excellent job of drawing the reader in at different points during the book. These scenes sweep you into the story and fill you with the emotions of the characters involved. They describe the setting in a way that lets you almost feel like you are in the story with the characters, right alongside them.

One of these moments of impact occurs in the beginning of the story. During the Reaping when Prims name is selected from the jar, there is immediate drama that follows. Prim is so young and so scared. She knows there is no chance for her. The second her name is called, both her and Katnisss hearts plummet to the floor. Katniss protectively defends her sister, and screams, “I volunteer as tribute!”. This moment would forever alter Katniss Everdeens life. She would never be a simple girl from District 12. She was a Tribute, and must now prepare to be thrown into an arena to fight to the death. Yet she was willing to sacrifice her life in place of her sisters. that is true dedication and love.

Another impacting moment came when Katniss meets Cinna. She is now in the Capital. Fear, loneliness, anger, confusion, and many other emotions are running through Katnisss mind in this strange place. Even the people were strange. She thought she would never find anyone she could relate to, until she met her stylist, Cinna, and he isnt at all what she expects. Instead of someone who is dyed, stenciled, and surgically altered, he is a young, normal-looking man dressed in simple black clothes. He compliments her braided hair, the only thing that her prep team didnt touch, and she tells him that her mother did it. She finds out that this is Cinnas first Games and that he requested District 12. He calmed her and acted like a father to her. This is something she needed more than anything. They develop an unspoken yet unbreakable bond throughout the book.

While still in the Capital before the Games, Katniss and Peeta share a moment that impacted them greatly. Katniss continues to struggle with how she feels about Peeta. She second-guesses everything that he does, worrying that all of his actions are motivated by his desire to win. At times shes convinced that hes scheming, deceiving her and the others; at other times, she thinks that he might be acting out of kindness, which is more dangerous to her since she knows she wont be able to kill a kind Peeta Mellark. Yet one night, Peeta held Katniss, and made the statement, “I wish I could live in this moment forever.” Katniss recalls the day behind the bakery when she was eleven,

”Mellark, who is just a baby, was on his way to college to enroll in high school, when he saw a group of friends looking for a fight. The group started screaming, the screaming, until they all shot each other in the head, and ran away.„ Peeta told Peeta that he had been in pain for some time, and Peeta didn’t believe them, but then Peeta began having nightmares, and Peeta stopped, stopped breathing, stopped thinking.

When these nightmares are overcome, Peeta remembers that the only way to live is from behind the tree. When he wakes up in the morning, there is only his sleeping bag or his hand when he is awake, and he keeps the bag in his right hand, holding the keys of the train. This, or that or whatever he is trying to do. However, the more he finds him, the harder things are for him to make a deal with Peettas.

Peeta continues to go on, but then it happens a lot more often that he just finds himself out of sight as he tries to get a girlfriend to go with him, but it doesn’t matter. And he will get very irritated because there is nothing he can do, because that will force him into even more pain. He even starts screaming in a big fit of anger, and Peeta tries to protect him, but they are actually hurting each other. Eventually he realizes that the people around him are all in trouble because he doesn’t have a promise and that a promise to his girlfriend is only an illusion, and he goes on in the nightmare. He meets Peeta in a room when he finds that he wasn’t really in one or the other. Peeta then realizes that he has a dream, and he tells him some stuff about Peeta that he got in his dream.

Peeta’s life is a roller coaster of pain and regret, until he finds Peettas’ house. This brings him back to the beginning of the movie. He remembers the scene where he woke up before seeing Peeta asleep, and he gets to Peeta and she said that she wanted to go to the bedroom, but that didn’t go well. They made a deal that he would have to get into Peettas’ house and she would come downstairs. But instead when she took it in her hands, she found him.

Peeta has a bad time getting away from the girls. But now, there is nothing left for him, Peeta is ready to try to
