The movie and the book Like Water for Chocolate are both well written. I enjoyed the book because it had a different layout than the other books we have read thus far. The film was an asset to see because it followed the book so well that it gave you more ideas about things that you might not have totally understood while reading it. This is the first Spanish movie that has had such a positive effect on the book which makes the movie that much more amazing.

When reading I tried to focus on the actual title of the book and why Esquirel chose this title above anything else. The quote that stood out to me the most is as follows, “Each person has to discover what will set off these explosions in order to live, since the combustion that occurs when one of them is ignited is what nourishes the soul” Tita, the main character in Laura Esquivels Like Water for Chocolate has gone through much pain and suffering in her life. Mama Elena, Titas mother, has been cruel and ruthless with Tita, causing her great emotional distress. After living many years under Mama Elenas strict rules and harsh treatment, Tita left her home and went to live with John Brown, a respected doctor. John helps rehabilitate Titas tired, lifeless soul, he helps her become a free woman who could do as she pleased and did not have to answer to her domineering mother.

One day when John is making matches he tells her a theory his Native American grandmother had; she believed everyone was born with a box of matches which are lighted up each time someone experiences a strong emotion. he story of his late grandmother along with the quote just set off the title in my mind. Like Water for Chocolate is simply a statement that can work to your benefit or show doubt. Esquirel did a fabulous job at trying to lay everything out in a simplistic matter, making the topic something that everyone enjoys, food. Tita goes through times in her life where she wasnt
