The Jilting of Granny Weatherall by Katherine Anne Porter is a story about an 80 year old womans life. The story takes place in her mind and in her bedroom while shes on her death bed. As she passes away she feels bitter, and fearful. She has three children: Lydia, Jimmy, and Cornelia. She has been jilted at the altar and at the end of the story by God. Granny never recovers from George having jilted her, she was not ready to die, and her favorite child Hapsy had died.
Granny Weatherall has flashbacks of her past that go as far back as 60 years. Her daughter named Hapsy died, granny felt extremely upset as any mother would after the death of her child. “Then Hapsy melted from within and turned flimsy as gray gauze and the baby was a gauzy shadow, and Hapsy came up close and said, “I thought youd never come,” and looked at her very searchingly and said, “You havent changed a bit!” Granny images Hapsy telling her many things in Heaven, which she didnt
have a chance to tell her here on earth. Cornelia listens as Granny tells her about imaging Hapsy standing down the hall. Losing a child is very heart breaking; it is something that takes a long time to recover from. The death of Hapsy stayed with Granny for so long that she begins to confess how she really feels. Hapsy is a very important person to Granny, and her death makes her bitter and angry. The passing of Hapsy has made her feel like she has lost a piece of her heart feel dark and cold.
George is the guy that left Granny at the altar and the person she was about to marry. On her wedding day George did not show up. John is Grannys husband who died. “But he had not come, just the same. What does a woman do when she has put on the white veil and set out the white cake for a man and he doesnt come? “When he does not show she gets very upset and angry. She prayed to God that she does not remember George and what he did to her at the altar. She loved George and admired him, he jilted her at the altar on their wedding day. Being left at the altar is a very harsh thing to do. Many people spend their hard earned money on invitations, arrangements, and cake for a wedding. “No, I swear he never harmed me but in that. He never harmed me but in that.” Granny looked forward to marrying the man of her dreams, but to be left standing at
