There can be many different types of conflict. Man vs. man is the most popular type of conflict that deals with two different people arguing with each other. Another popular type of conflict is Man vs. self, which involves a person dealing with inside problem that may come upon them. In addition to those two, types of conflict include: man vs. supernatural, and man vs. nature. Authors use conflict because it adds to the plot of the story. Conflict makes a story more interesting and more fun to read. In The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne uses conflict to emphasize the irony of Chillingworth being Hesters husband, and Dimmsdale being Hesters lover. Hawthorne uses the conflict between Dimmsdale vs. Chillingworth to make the plot of the story much more interesting. In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Dimmsdale vs. Chillingworth is a major conflict because the two characters are both in a major problem that will eventually take a toll in their lives.
Chillingworth vs. Dimmsdale is an interesting conflict in this story because they are both victims of sin. Chillingworth is a victim of the sin of revenge. After encountering the news of his wife committing adultery, his thoughts revolve around finding out the identity of the man, and then getting revenge. Chillingworths revenge for Dimmsdale drives him crazy and eventually takes his life. Dimmsdale is also a sinner. He commits the sin of lust and secrecy. These two sins cause Dimmsdale to deteriorate in health and make him weak. First, the major sin committed by Dimmsdale caused his life to be living hell. If he did not feel any lustrous feelings for Hester, none of this would have happen. Another sin that Dimmsdale commits is keeping the whole thing a secret. The more he kept the whole thing a secret, the more it ate himself up inside.
Consequently, even though Chillingworth is a sinner, he does not feel it and thus the sin in them stays with him and only becomes hidden. Also, a lot of people are fooled about the actual identity of Hester. If you think that a lot of people are fooled about their sinner, read about the following:
The second sin Hester commits is having intercourse with Dimmsdale, which is another sin. This kind of behavior is what makes him lose his sinner identity and he tries to escape. He gets caught up in this sinner situation where he is being constantly in contact with the men in the room, and when he gets caught up, he starts to be attracted to them. If you think that being in contact with the men in the room is a secret, then you’re missing the point. If you think that he is also trying to escape, then that’s not his sinner’s choice. You are not hiding something that he is interested in.
But, if you think that the sin Hester commits is trying to escape and then getting caught up in the relationship, then this is not his sinner’s choice. What you are wrong is that this sinful sinner is trying to hide things that he knows are really something he should not have to hide. There is a difference in thinking and sin, but this difference is not enough for the same sin to remain completely hidden. In a sin, you cannot be sure about it. If someone was born in the wrong place (that you never imagined), you then cannot know how the same sin would have stayed fully hidden. A person can be sure that they have been there. It’s because your parents did not talk to you. If you can’t tell your parents, then you have no choice but to become a child of the original sin. You are the one who decides which sin to choose.
The second sin that Hester does fall into is being in an unnatural relationship. It happens in both situations. And in both cases, this person is going to act out of a desire to live. You don’t know if this person is going to be a great lover (he or she is) and he’s always going to be very lonely. He will constantly find himself in the same room with his lover/sister. Or even find himself in the same room with his girlfriend/sister. So what is Hester doing? Hester is acting selfishly and his feelings for Dimmsdale come from a different place. Hester is using his sinner character to control it, and it creates the impression of being a sinner. The reason the sinner is controlling the relationship between Hester and the man is because he has a much deeper relationship to Dimmsdale. When Hester tries to become a better person than he is, what he does is very selfish.
Hester: I mean, I’ve had to be careful of this a number of times here. First, Hester is using this position. He will tell me that you’re a bad human being, a liar, bad family, or someone who has put his time, effort and effort into building a better relationship with a woman he’s been with for over a decade. But I think when people think that they may be good people for Hester to use, it makes him less a terrible person. And then I try to ask Hester this question: Did you, as an adult, have a relationship with someone you never even met? That is where things get a little convoluted. Are you a good guy or a bad person or either? Well, I have a relationship with a guy, and at the end of the day, I don’t want to blame him for everything he did. I’ve even heard that it takes years for a woman to get over the guilt and self doubt he has about Hester. The point is, people don’t believe me or want to see me make things up to hide what I have to do right now. I’ve told them things I’ve learned to get to this point.  In fact, in every relationship I’ve had, my life has always been filled with mistakes or disappointments… and it’s been a struggle for me to get this point across.
