“Poor wounded name! My bosom as a bed, shall lodge thee.” This is the famous saying written by Shakespeare which comes from the introduction of Tess of the DUrbervilles.
Tess of the DUrbervilles is one of the great works by famous English novelist Thomas Hardy. The novel describes a pure girl whose name is Tess Durbeyfield and her unhappy fate. The Heroine of this novel is a beautiful farm girl called Tess Durbeyfield who had sex with a bastardly man Alec dUrbervilles. Then Tess got pregnant and gave birth to a child. However, the baby was dead soon. Later, she fell in love with and married with Angel Clare in a dairy farm. They confessed their faults to each other on the night of their wedding day. Tess was very kind enough to forgive Angel, but angel could not accept the truth and left Tess after much turning and struggling. Then Tess became a labor again, but she was ill-treated by the master and sadly her father died suddenly. At last, she happened to meet the Alec whose work was a preacher. Tess had nothing to do but to get support from Alec. At the same time, Alec cheated the simple Tess that Angel would never come back. So they started cohabitation. Before long, Angel came back again. Tess was too eager to achieve her true happiness to kill Alec. After a five-day on the run, Tess was caught by police.
Tesss character trait and cruel society contribute to Tesss tragedy. Especially, Tesss sense of responsibility plays a leading role in her pitiful life.
At the beginning of this novel, Tesss fool parents wanted her to seek for an alliance with Mrs. Durbeyfield.
