Hypothesis: Males will be more prone towards internet addiction than femalesIntroductionSome years ago, the only people who spent a majority of their leisure time on the computer were paid members of the technology industry. As the web has become a part of mainstream life, some mental health professionals have noticed that a percentage of people using the web do so in a compulsive, addictive and out of control manner. For better or for worse, this compulsive Internet use has been termed Internet Addiction based on its superficial similarity to common addictions such as smoking, drinking, and gambling. Internet Addiction has even been championed as an actual disorder, notably by psychologists Kimberly Young, PhD and David Greenfield, Ph.D.

In a true addiction a person becomes completely dependent on the internet to the point where obtaining a supply of stimulation is extremely necessary for that person and is a central focus of that person’s life. Some differences have been found among people who use the internet in a positive and healthy way and between those who don’t. For example, Individuals with Internet Addiction were found to be more interested towards interactive Internet applications, which includes activities such as chatting and shopping, whereas those individuals who are not addicted to the internet and are non dependant on it and are almost quite often sending emails and searching for information.(Young, 2006). Prevalence of internet addiction is found to be more

The prevalence of Internet addiction on US adults has been high. The average age of US adults is 42.7 years for Adults with Internet Addiction and 32.1 years for the general population. Individuals at the highest risk of Internet Addiction are those who are self-titled, people with other severe internet-related medical conditions are at higher risk of Internet Addiction and those who do not engage in Internet Addiction are considered less able to handle the internet and to help others who are being Internet addicted. Some researchers have said that Internet Addiction is associated with increased risk of mental illness and substance abuse and to be especially susceptible to the problems that the internet does. For example, in a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association(Schleicher-Waltz, 1988), people with Internet Addiction were more likely to be diagnosed with depression, anxiety and other depression problems when compared to those who were not in treatment. An online addiction in many cases (e.g., using an Internet-based addiction treatment program) is highly likely to lead to severe mental health problems, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, substance abuse and suicidal behavior.

The link between Internet addiction and mental health is strong. One link between the presence of Internet addiction disorder, the use of prescription narcotics by those who cannot afford them, and the development of Internet addiction is unclear. People with Internet addiction experience a loss of independence, are vulnerable to other forms of depression and substance abuse and may be prone to mental disabilities, such as hyperactivity disorder.(Schleicher-Waltz, 1988): 3. Users of prescription opiate medications can have difficulty accessing information to help them access the information they need. The number of users who cannot access information on prescription opiates to help them access the information they want is higher than the number who may be able. Some people who lack access to the information in order to access treatment, such as some people with Internet addiction, may lack the capacity to make decisions with more clarity and in more detail during the treatment visit.

It should be noted that people with Internet addiction who do not have access to information to help them access the information they want may be more likely to be diagnosed using online methods of counseling.
