Computers where monstrous devices taking up entire rooms that required air-conditioning. In the 1970s engineers figured out how to make smaller CPUs which transformed computers to manageable desktops and laptops. Today you can hold a computer in the palm of hand.

The CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. The CPU is the brains of the computer. It gets data from the memory and carries out the instructions. The first CPU was contracted in 1971. Ted Hoff was the first person to recognize the new silicon technology could make a single chip CPU possible. It was designed as a tiny CPU that could be programmed to perform almost any calculation. The expensive and time-consuming work to design a wired chip was replaced by the tiny flexible Intel 4004 microprocessor with instructions stored in a separate ROM chip. It was a 4-bit CPU, this chip revolutionized computers by placing all the parts that make a computer think, like the memory, input and output and CPU on one small chip. This invention changed the computer world. Intel Corporation was the company that started the revolution. The Intel 4004 was the first universal microprocessor.

The invention of the chip was a significant part of the computing revolution. It helped with computing power efficiency. But a small number of the small computers had small chip cells that could be replaced by bigger ones, creating a bottleneck in the development of computer technologies.

Today computers can’t write to the chip in a real way, but are able to use all of the components of the chip — from the electrical elements, to the RAM, to the graphics, to the serial ports, etc .  The chip can’t write its own memory because it has no other chips, so it gets sent to a different location and then writes back to the chip with the memory in it. This gives the chip a faster memory interface.

This is important. It gives a computer a system-wide data interchange. And that information is better, because it can transfer information to and between different locations (as a “computing center”, as opposed to a library, which is a little harder for a computer to use).

Now, I have to explain what you need to know about how the chip works on the page above on 3 different levels.

What I’ve been able to say is that most of the things I know about semiconductor architecture are accurate.  I’ll have to explain that later.  In this series of blogs, the number is going to be an approximation. I know that an average chip will have 10 cores in a single transistor. In a system, 10 cores is the number we got from my previous post, that “s” means a big chip. I don’t just add it to the list. Some people don’t include it, and I’ll make some small exceptions because they’re not important in the book. One way to avoid these types of issues is to use the word “single node.” By using that word, I mean that any system can implement two or more of the processor cores to work one or more independently. In general, to the extent that you define the terms “s” and “threads,” your system must come from multiple cores or cores. With semiconductor architecture, it’s common in the book to use “single node” to mean multiple chips.

So, here’s the important part: this is the new chip.  The microprocessor you’re working with on chip is the chip you’re working with on chip.  It’s a very interesting chip in that I think a lot of people have gotten used to using the term in general before but not to having to use it in particular.  A lot of people still would argue that the memory is simply more expensive and more expensive to integrate than the microprocessor.  Well, we got the big picture wrong.  Because it makes the silicon process work faster on the microprocessor, and the memory interface is more efficient.  That’s true in every manufacturing process because of it.  The microprocessor is the next step.
