The origins of slavery in the colonial United States are complex. There are several theories that have been proposed to explain what has happened. The origin and development of slavery in colonial North America were affected by the origin, colonial time, and the Revolution.
The first signs of slavery in the colonies developed in James town. Which was the first established permanent colony. The colony soon realized that tobacco would be the cash crop. The colonist would need labor to grow the tobacco. This means the rich people of the colony would not being doing this work and those who had money made that clear. The indentured servants were used first. But the key with the servants was that they worked for 7 years and then were allowed to live in the colony as a regular citizen. But the colonist realized that the indentured servants cost too much since the wealthy colonist had to pay for the servants to come to James town in the first place. So with this in 1619 the Dutch brought in the first Africans to Jamestown.
The colonial times of the development of slavery only increases as time went on. At the same time, Bacons Rebellion of 1676 led planters to worry about the prospective dangers of creating a large class of restless, landless, and relatively poor white men because most of them former indentured servants. Wealthy Virginia and Maryland planters began to buy slaves in preference to indentured servants during the 1660s and 1670s, and poorer planters followed suit by c.1700. They did this because slaves cost more than servants, so initially only the wealthy could invest in slaves.
