In the paragraphs below I will be comparing and contrasting snowstorm and daybreak in the tropics. Snowstorm is a poem set in the countryside. We know this as it talks about valleys and cottage doors. The poem talks about a snowstorm which has hit this place and blocked all the doors. Snowstorm is set in night time and then goes on to talk about the morning. The daybreak in the tropics is set in the forest. It is very hot there and it is day time.

Both poems are set in opposite seasons and times. Daybreak in the Tropics is set at daytime in the summer whereas snowstorm is set at daytime in the winter. Both poems are set a day but they have a different atmosphere. Snowstorm is talking about the day after the storm and sets a calm atmosphere. This is evident in the quote “Are turned to one white sweep of curving hills.” This phrase infers to the reader that the place has nothing but snow. If there is nothing there, then there must be no noise. On the other hand, ‘Day break in the tropics’ describes a chaotic atmosphere. The author writes “They scream across the forest’s leafy verge.” The word ‘scream’ is alludes to hectic and tells the reader everything is going wrong. In both poems the weather is dangerous. ‘Snowstorm’ has had a snowstorm with was dangerous. The poet has written “Incessant batter at the window-pane.” The phrase ‘Incessant batter’ tell the reader the snowstorm was not stopping and kept going on and it was very violent. The daybreak in the tropics talks about the sun being so hot birds have to leave. This is evident in the quote “Like fugitives forsaking stricken homes.” The word stricken sets a violet atmosphere. We normally associate stricken with attacks. This infers the sun had attacked the forest. As a reader this make you feel the weather is very dangerous.

In the poem ‘Day break in the Tropics’ the opening is describing the place. They start to talk about the alligators. The opening creates a tensed atmosphere. This is because alligators are normally very violent and they are predators. The line “the alligators smile. Alternately disclosing greed and guile.” The words smile and guile have more emphasis on them as they rhyme. The poet has done this as the word guile shows the smile is a cunning and sly smile. This builds up tension as you know the alligator is going to strike or is up to something. This foreshadows something bad is going to happen. Snowstorm also starts off
