Data CollectionBallard Integrated Managed Services, Inc. (BIMS) is a support service company that specializes in providing housekeeping and food services for corporations and institution.  BIMS has established itself as highly competitive in the industry by combing services in housekeeping, foodservice, general cleaning, and physical plant maintenance.  Barbara, General Manager, of Ballard Integrated Medical Services, Inc. is concerned about her staff’s morale.  In her position as general manager, Barbara is responsible for three divisions at this site each has a management team.  The food service division is led by Flores Torres, the hospitality division is led by Henry Dumas, and the Physical Plant Maintenance led by Matt Lee. The problems in the company are from a broad scale of weakening morale, increase in the turnover rate, an increase in the use of sick days, and employees just running the clock and not doing the tasks to satisfaction of the supervisor.  The poor work ethic has also increased the complaints from the hospital administration.  The purpose of the survey is to determine why the turnover rate has increased, the morale has weakened, why employees are using more sick days, why time is being wasted, and why the work ethic has become inadequate.

The research question that Debbie created were answered on a scale of 1 to 5.  1 being very negative and 5 being very positive.  The questions range from employee’s satisfaction with their shifts, comfort with their training to complete their job, and communication skills in the company, fear of job safety, satisfaction with wages, to how they feel about their supervisor’s boss treats each division. The majority of the survey answers are negative.  On every question, the most common response was 2.  The results tells Barbara that most of the employees in the departments are unhappy with their schedules, pay, supervisors, the communication, and fear of losing their jobs.  Overall it seems like the employees’ morale and work ethic is weakening because they are unhappy with their work conditions. Many Data Collection Instruments are available for organizations to use.  In order to gauge how workers’ attitudes affect the workplace, an organization can use a very simple tool such as a survey.  For BIMS, a survey instrument was created in an effort to allow the workers to express their views about their individual experiences at the company.  The survey begins by asking questions about the employee’s feelings toward their position and the relationship between them and their supervisor.  The study also includes demographic questions that identify the division they are assigned to and how long they have been employed in the company.  Looking at the data an individual can expect to find that the increase in turnover to be directly related to communication issues between staff and workers, long hours, and low pay.  The instrument used for data collection was a survey.  Using the survey tool enables the company to gather information on attitudes, opinions, and satisfaction levels of individuals.
