Arranged Marriages versus Love Marriages Elizah Shehab -09046Date: 9/9/2015Marriage is a very important social institution. It’s a sacred bond between two individuals and every individual wants to have a perfect match. One of the most important decisions two people can take is to decide to live together with each other. In love marriages, individuals prefer to choose their partners on their own, while in case of arrange marriages individuals prefers partners chosen by their family or parents. There is a continuous debate regarding the best way to choose a life partner. If this decision is made irrationally or hastily, the consequences could be severe. I favor love marriages over arranged marriages.-marriage must involve an element of love, mutual understanding and trust between two people before they actually get married rather than discovering love after they get married.-it takes a lot of time and experience to get to know a person you want to spend your entire life with and you can only choose a suitable life partner for yourself when you have spent ample time with him/her.-you will have first-hand knowledge of their traits, habits, likes, dislikes, financial status, educational qualifications. So no surprises and risks involved. No disappointments as such because you already know what to expect.-takes time to establish compatibility between two people. This takes understanding and more than just one meeting.-you are better off making your own decisions rather than outsiders or even your parents making that huge life decision for you because at the end of the day it is your life and not your parents’ or family’s.- even if there are problems in your marriage you wont have anyone else to blame but you will take responsibility for your own decisions and be willing to compromise or sacrifice for the sake of love.
– couples can eradicate social evil like dowry with their mutual consent because they have the independence to take such decisions at their own level.-The culture of the extravagant spending too can be curbed by the understanding between the couple.- marriage is not marriage between two families, it is only between the two individuals who will face each other every hour of the day so only they have the right to make that decision.-maybe you don’t even need a family like that who isn’t supportive of your actions that are as big as, who do you want to spend the rest of your life with. That is a basic human right; who do you choose to live with. You can always come to compromises with parents and listen to what they have to say but the final decision should be yours.-sometimes parents too can make errors in judgments by getting too emotional when it comes to sensitive topics like marriages or by focusing on one aspect of the person such as looks or education, financial stability etc. Both ways have their merits and demerits. Love marriages can fail too and arranged marriages aren’t complete failures either. Though families are involved in most of the marriages, it’s the couple which has to live together for a lifetime. So, the decision to choose life partner should be left to the individuals and parents should let their children do what’s best for them. Ultimately no one can certify the best way for a perfect marriage life because like life marriages too are full of uncertainties and are more or less like a gamble.
