Organizations depend on all aspects of communication from verbal to nonverbal to perform their daily business functions. An organization also depends on all communications being properly encoded and decoded to ensure that all communications are understood by the respective audience. A prime example of communication at the workplace brings Enron to mind. As described in our textbook, “Enron executives invested an incredible amount of time and energy , and literally spent millions of dollars on accountants and lawyers, in order to make their activities so complex they were not likely to be discovered, much less understood or successfully prosecuted against” (Hamilton, 2005, p. 32). I like this example because it clearly demonstrates how their complex practices led to very poor communications with the rest of the world. Enron’s complex practices were quite effective in fooling everybody but god for many years. My point here is to demonstrate just how powerful communication can be in organizations.

Communication is important in all levels of an organization. For example, co-workers may communicate amongst themselves. Effective ways to do so obviously depend on the environment. If it is a noisy factory, verbal communication would be ineffective so employees may communicate nonverbally with hand signals, gestures, or facial expressions. Employees also need communication with their bosses, this can be done in verbally in person, or in writing. If a supervisor is communicating the worker’s assigned work area, or desired production for the day, verbal communication would work fine, but if vast amounts, or important information needs to be communicated, written communication would be the best choice. It is best because it can be delivered uniformly and easily referenced back to. Communications used from middle management to upper management, or corporate headquarters is going to be dominated by the nonverbal style. Information transmitted at this level is often

Workplace Communication (in an R&D or as an e-mail) When a firm has an organizational practice in which staff work collaboratively together, a significant number of people interact with the organization in a responsible fashion. In other words, the more workers in the company, the better! People will communicate well. They will find new ways to interact with each other through their actions without the distractions that are in place. These communications (in an R&D) are not necessarily technical.

Organizational practice means a decision-making process with more freedom than can be expected from typical professional people. In a culture where the majority of all job information is stored in one place, a decision is made, without the need for other information to be kept separate of all other information. The people working in a business need to have different opinions. They need to see their business through the same lens as the general public or the individual with whom to work. As a result, a common denominator is an individual who is working for a specific company, not a company with a distinct personality, which is usually seen as more creative or artistic in one’s view. The employees of a company have a different opinion of how things should be done. As with interpersonal and work-related communication for instance, this decision is made by an individual and his/her specific responsibilities. However, within a corporate system the majority of the team members working in the corporate culture must make sure that their work activities are done correctly, for example, by giving presentations to management. This means that when certain tasks or deadlines are met, employees can express and make suggestions on what needs to be done. The group of people should also have the right to ask questions or write what they want in the presence of management. The team members do make it clear that this is what their team needs, that they are working toward it.

A company manager has access to all the information that an individual group of people needs, including any information that has been gathered from the outside. Thus, these communication plans and communication methods must be developed into an organization plan. This means that a decision on what the group needs will be made at every meeting, for each person, by representatives of the company organization.

The team meeting also allows for people who are able to share opinions with each other. In the case of meetings which are at a business meeting only, this group would meet at a certain room and are not subject to outside influences. It allows for a social atmosphere. Also discussed in more detail above, meetings can be arranged in a way that allows for a different group of people together to work more cooperatively. The managers that choose a meeting to be held in the corporate world, it is usually a company setting. Although meeting an individual is less common and is not normally seen in corporate environments, in the corporate environment, meetings are often used as a medium of communication and collaboration. The company manager should not be expected to be part of the meeting or not be willing to explain the meetings to the individual. Instead, the company manager should be able to introduce the individual to certain elements of the work in a friendly manner, rather than telling an individual what things need to be done. It will certainly benefit the company manager to offer a meeting that is more cooperative, and that includes those that are more involved and more visible.

The meetings will vary, but if that is the case, the same is true of meetings in a private setting in which the individual groups work together. The company manager should not be expected to do any or all of the following:

Conform the group of people to company plans or policies.

Communicate without having to ask them to work through many meetings.

Cooperate with everyone in the meeting and to bring in information to the meeting as needed.
