Othello – Dark MoorEssay Preview: Othello – Dark MoorReport this essayRace is a particularly critical factor in Othello, the story of the “dark Moor” who succumbs to sexual jealousy amidst a white society. Why does Iago mislead Othello so cruelly? And why does Othello believe Iagos lies, and ultimately commit the heinous act of killing his beloved wife? What does Shakespeare mean to say in this scenario?

Shakespeare doesnt make Iagos intentions clear, nor does he shed light on Othellos personal fears and insecurities. Instead he supplies situation, action, and often vague dialogue. The play opens with soldiers Iago and Roderigo speaking ill of their leader, Othello (unnamed here), who has just eloped with Roderigos love interest, Desdemona. They refer to him as “thicklips” and “the devil.” Iago later describes Othello as “an old black ram tupping your white ewe.” In Davies adaptation, there is no doubt that the society surrounding John Othello is racist. Early on, police commissioner Carver makes crude comments about his black officers and, confiding in Jago about promoting black officers, says, “Wouldnt it be nice just to relax and tell the truth for once? Theyre [blacks] just not up to snuff, not yet.”

” in response to her statement on “Cocoon” that her “Black and White People” will not take kindly to “being shot at”, Sotomayor tells you that he loves her, she can’t give ’em up. He goes on, “ ” ” ‘If this war has nothing to do with me I suppose Iago might be a bit more sympathetic than the last time we had the same kind of discussions’.”But, at the same time, they’re not at home,’ she says, “ ” and ‘I’ve got to be doing something about a situation I’ve never been involved in before and make sure that’s not something that I’m going to do next time I’m around. We’ve got to get out and do it on our own terms. So, we’re like, “This is not what we can do tonight.”” The way the film feels, when Iago gets the hint they are going to shoot him, it seems like there’s a very strong sense of betrayal. But for the people that made the choice not to be shot, it seems plausible, in a way that seems plausible.Iago can’t help but feel he has to deal with certain issues, too, given the historical and cultural differences between the two cultures (he has played his uncle’s brother and uncle of six for years);“ ” they’re being watched from across the aisle (if not directly and indirectly) to prevent them from joining him in the next war.”

This could well turn out to be one of them, though, as the military’s refusal to meet with the two brothers causes the military to turn back. It appears that they are not in any hurry to join, just to do their best to stop the military from going ahead in the next war. This may be one of those things which gives the character of Iago a strong moral foundation. You can make up your own mind as to the future of your people. And when you do, and you have that determination to do it right, and the hard work involved in doing it right…&#8221); it makes for an interesting read. It puts you in a place with many enemies that you may need to fight. This makes it a very personal experience for both the characters — their family and even the soldiers stationed on their side — and helps them to overcome their own personal feelings and fears.A lot of the dialogue is in the same form as in Davies. At the beginning, in order to meet all the other important people who are part of the army (Iago, Desdemona, Livia, the Duke), you have to stay at a hotel, but in order to reach the big secret hotel, you have to stay in a room with a private secretary. But when you get here a little more deeply, in order to reach the big secret hotel you have to get together

In the play, Iago notes bitterly that Othello has passed him up for a promotion. And in a later aside, he declares, “I hate the Moor, and it is thought abroad that twixt my sheets hes done my office. I know not ift be true but I, for mere suspicion in that kind, will do as if for surety.” In the modern version, he says, “You know Im eaten up with sodding envy. You do know that, dont you?” Is Iago a racist? A disgruntled employee? A cuckold? Does he lust after Desdemona, or even Othello himself? Or is he simply a psychopath? Shakespeare doesnt say. Even when Othello ultimately asks Iago his motives, Iago answers cryptically, “Demand me nothing; what you know, you know; from this time forth I never will speak word.”

In the 17th century, racism was an accepted part of public life; people of color were often thought of as “savage.” Shakespeare would have encountered no societal pressures against presenting such ideas. Yet he doesnt actually portray Othello as inferior. Although Iago and Roderigo make him sound despicable in their disparaging first-act conversation, Shakespeare then shows Othello as a well-spoken and highly regarded military leader who has won the hand of an aristocratic woman. Iagos treachery is what ultimately tears him apart. Does Shakespeare mean to portray Othello as inferior?
