Children are definitely our human beings future, and if something affects children, it will be a big problem in our life. Electronic devices are now launching a technology tide, but no one knows whether it could be positive or negative in the long term. However, it is becoming more clear that children will be harmed in many ways if they touch electronic devices in the early stages of their lives, such as psychological influence, physical problems and habit formations.
Our society has changed much since twenty-first century. Inventions and new technologies boom like a hurricane sweeping everyone over the world. The core of this revolution is commonly considered as the Internet, which is like a wizard in our life. Undoubtedly, the Internet makes our work more efficient, our life easier and our pace of step faster. The rhythm of life accelerates. George Ritzer, a sociologist who studies American patterns of consumption, globalization, metatheory, and modern and postmodern social theory named it “McDonaldization.” This phenomenon obviously is not mainly caused by McDonalds, while it is related to the fast food industry. The Internet is one of the factors that is changing our style of life. Before I get into my thesis statement, it is essential to understand the what kind of society we are living in because what I am going to discuss is not to blame something or someone. It is a general phenomenon.
Our children now is growing up under the situation I talked above. Utilitarianism which means benefits should be the most important thing is surrounding our children when their brains are initially growing up. The Human Brain Report says that the human brain participates in every human emotion, every human feeling, every human thought and every human decision. No other natural or engineered system can match its ability to adapt to novel challenges, to acquire new information and skills, to take complex decisions and to work reliably for decades on end . Therefore, when our children see, hear and think that electronic devices would make our life “better” commonly, they may gradually become utilitarianism. Psychologically, children bury a seed that high efficiency and benefits are the key value in their deep heart, and they know electronic devices can help them to achieve their aims simply. Then they will depend on those tools and consider electronic devices equal a way to realize their value. This process seems that the problem is caused by adults, but do not forget that electronic devices change adults firstly. It sounds like an alarmism because we really get benefits from electronic devices. However, do not neglect the difference between adults and children. Adults may not change their value of their lives simply when they are still absorbed in the technology revolution, while children are like pieces of blank paper psychologically.
