First, Matthias questioned the punishment laid upon Jesus. Seeing that the Sanhedrin and he found Jesus guilty of blasphemy, and for that offense, according to their laws, the punishment is death by stoning. Then the punishment was supposedly and usually inflicted by those witnesses who come forth to testify the guilty one. It was written that they should throw the first stones and then the crowd usually joins in.
“But Jesus was not stoned to death; he was crucified on a cross! And he was not executed for blasphemy but sedition! And not by your witnesses and the crowd but by the Roman soldiers!” – Matthias
Second, Matthias told him that he was granted permission by Pilate to execute Jesus, the prisoner and yet Pilate changed his mind. Speculation was that Pilate was merely and instrument of his death.
Matthias also told him about several men of wisdom and knowledgeable of the law confiding with him secretly that the entire action against Jesus was illegal and broke many laws of the sacred codes that Caiaphas, as high priest, and the other members of the Sanhedrin, sworn to observe and enforce.
Of course, it was only normal that Caiaphas be affronted by this matter since he did not have (as how he seems) any idea that the people were thinking about this to him. No one had the audacity to tell him this. He expected that the people respected him as their high priest, along with the decisions he makes; but he was wrong. He was so withdrawn from his people that he has never heard of these accusations.
