After taking the Myers-Brigg Assessment, I found that I am an ESTJ type. My assertiveness, rationality, loyalty, and decisiveness will help me as a manager because, according the test, I have the personality of one that takes charge and brings others into line by assigning tasks and roles, giving clear-cut instructions, following up regularly to check progress and giving formal recognition to those who do as theyve been told.

As far as dominant values are concerned, I have a high level of openness to change, according to the assessments. Since a managers duties and responsibilities are constantly changing, excitement and challenge, or stimulation are highly regarded attributes to have. Another dominating value of mine is self-direction, which is important because choosing decisions, creating policies, and exploring new ideas—all parts of a managers responsibilities.

My “moderate individualism” score on the assessment is useful to know as a manager because I do, indeed, value my self-sufficiency, uniqueness, control over my own life, and control in a given situation, in and outside of work.

Although we do live in a collectivistic culture, I was surprised to see that I score relatively moderate on collectivism. In a social setting, I do lean towards “more collectivistic”, however, in a work setting, I would compare myself as being “less collectivistic”, or at least I would hope to be. In management, I believe it is important that one is able to separate him or herself from group harmony and be less definitive of group membership.

As a manager, knowing an employees general beliefs about the amount of control he or she has over personal life events is important when it comes to job orientation. As for me, I lean towards having an internal locus of control. I am self-motivated and a problem-solver. Management usually calls for quick thinking and improvisation, and rarely sympathizes with external factors to solve a situation

In a managerial position, I believe it is important to have a high level of cognitive empathy. As a relatively high perspective taker, I know that in management, one must realize these differences when attempting to understand his or her employees behaviors.

I also have an above average propensity of emotional empathy. One must take into consideration other peoples thoughts, feeling, and situations. Having a strong propensity for emotional empathy can be a valuable tool for a manager because recognizing that everyone has their own unique characteristics is important when communicating. After taking the assessment, I realized that it was very accurate in describing my emotional personality, and even tied into my Myers-Brigg type. In general,
