Freud suggests that melancholia is in some way related to an object loss, which is withdrawn from consciousness, schizophrenia. In Herman Melville’s short story, “Bartleby”, the Lawyer hires a scrivener who, according to the Lawyer, is “one of those beings of whom nothing is ascertainable, except from the original sources, and, in his case, those were very small.” The new scrivener, Bartleby, is at first an extremely diligent worker until one day when Bartleby decides that he doesn’t want to work anymore.

An employer is bound by obligation to himself and to the company to see that every person under them is doing what is to be expected of them. If the employer does not enforce upon his or her employees the tasks that are required of them, then the company will most likely eventually fall into ruin. I believe that there are certain punishments that should be inflicted upon the employees if a situation arises where they do not perform what is obligatory of them. If an employee persistently defies the regulations of the company, then it is the duty of the company to fire that employee due to the best interests of the company and its remaining employees in the future. One bad apple can ruin the whole bunch just as one employee can bring an end to an entire company.

According to the law, if an employee is injured in any way on the job, then the employer has an obligation to pay for medical bills and compensate them for all the time off of work that the individual might need to recover, or as much as is indicated in the company’s bi-laws. When looking at the same issue from a moral standpoint it becomes a completely different situation. If there is nothing stated in the rules of a company that provide coverage for an employee under workman’s comp, then it is up to the employer to decide what should be done.
