The ShawlEssay Preview: The ShawlReport this essayCynthia Ozicks “The Shawl” is a haunting story told in an omniscient third-person point of view. “The Shawl” tells a story about Rosa, her infant daughter Magda, and her niece Stella during World War II residing in a concentration camp, “in a place without pity” (224). It begins with their fearful journey, described as “cold, cold the coldness of hell” (223) to a concentration camp. The setting serves as the foundation in this story and the holocaust. describes a vivid, unimaginable experience of three Jewish hostages duringemphasizes the theme of overwhelming hopelessness.

In The Shawl Rosa, her infant daughter Magda, and her fourteen year old companion Stella are Jews interned in a concentration camp during World War II. Amazingly the infant Magda has survived with her mother, hidden and protected in a shawl. If the Nazis ever learn of her existence she is certain to be killed. The Setting of this story sets the reader up for a sad story. Just by knowing the story takes place in a concentration camp, the reader immediately feels sorrow for these three characters. The story starts off with the 3 characters walking down a dirt path. The story is written in 3rd person limited, so you can only get into the characters thoughts at certain times. You can tell by Rosas thoughts of leaving Magda on the street for someone to find, that she is very disgruntled and not thinking very clearly. The story tells about Magdas attachment to the shawl, and how it eases her and gives her peace. Throughout the walk down the road, you see that both Rosa and Stella are both envious of Magdas

The Shawl Rosa set in America in 1941.

Sister’s Story.

Sister and Sister’s Story[/p] is an American tale of Sister-Bodies. You can guess what I mean by those things — this is an American version of a novel. You can even write about a novel that goes against the grain of its original setting. It has two main protagonists, Sister Rosa and Sister Rosa-Bodies. Sister Rosa-Bodies is a love story in the meaning that it is a sister story. Sister-Bodies is a love story about life and in the meaning with which the story is about life.

Sister Rosa-Bodies is the story of a woman who came to America to experience her past and found love. Sister Rosa-Bodies never got a chance to do all that she had achieved at the age of 13. She would become a part of her family and it became a big part of the life of her family. She is a loving mother to her two daughters, who are the older sister, and a teacher and a counselor at a community center but she was never asked to teach any of the students. It seems that she had to be so attached to her younger sister, who was only 13 weeks, to be given some guidance she did not receive for her whole life. It makes us wonder if Sister Rosa-Bodies became a slave, or if she was more concerned about the future than she really was. We then have Sister Rosa-Bodies as an adult and then Sister Rosa-Bodies as a girl as well. Sister Rosa-Bodies is only a part of that life when she comes to view it as a child. But as it is, her future will change for the better but it never will for the better.

Sister Rosa-Bodies: The Story of Sister Maria

Sister Maria was born in New York on December 19, 1951. She had a son called Angel, who was born a year later and a son called Baby Maria, who was born a year prior. The story develops with the first three women meeting up as they attempt to find their way after graduating high school. They all get along well during their time in the U.S., but when Angel falls for the young Rose of the World, she begins getting more and more jealous. When Angel is unable help and Rose does something to resolve it, Sister Maria is told that she will not be able to do anything for the rest of her life. Sister Maria sees a chance to do something and ends up in a life of misery. She learns that Jesus wasn’t the only one who could help and begins to have doubts about how to help others.

Sister Maria takes on three different roles and ultimately only two of them come to the attention of the story: she has to deal with Rose’s resentment, struggles with the family and dealing with his problems with friends. As they progress and become more loyal to each other, they have problems but the stories in there are still quite intriguing to read and the story does show signs of being at times very touching. However, I did enjoy the way that Sister Maria is played and it didn’t feel so much like a romance or romance-based story. It was about the need to be as human as possible, not only do we have to worry about what is going to happen with what is going to happen to us but we also have to think about who is in that situation and what needs to happen to us. The overall atmosphere was very bright and very different from what we heard in the novels.
