Discrimination within Maycomb County
In Harper Lee’s, To Kill A Mockingbird, understanding the extent to which the great depression and living conditions in the Southern United States affects the most prominent themes throughout the story such as racism. Racism bears a great influence on your understanding of the text as a whole. The cause of racism towards colored people in the story are some specific laws that Maycomb has in place, they state that “In our [Maycomb’s] courts, when it’s a white man’s word against a black man’s, the white man always wins” (Lee 295). This act of racism shows how the time during which the story occurred affected the reader’s understanding of the text, this occurred because racism and laws against equal rights for races were very prevalent during the early 1930s. Consequently, Tom Robinson, an innocent man was accused and convicted of rape after Judge Taylor polled the votes of the jury voted for a guilty verdict (Lee 282).
