Group Communication Competencies SummaryRobin MathersUniversity of PhoenixTeamwork, Collaboration, and Conflict ResolutionSOC/110Michael BakerAugust 31, 2015Group Communication Competencies SummaryMost of the groups I have been part of have been because of sporting events.  I’ve played soccer most of my life, racquetball (and I enjoyed doubles quite a bit), football and cross country.  I used to golf but that wasn’t part of a team.  I loved the concept of team sports, how we would all pull together to achieve a win, or all take the loss personally if we would lose.  Either way, the teams I was on were tight knit and we all worked together.  Working as part of a team in a work environment is a new situation for me.  I’ve sat in team meetings where nothing was truly accomplished and I wondered why we even had the meeting.  I’ve also sat in some meetings that were extremely informative, I felt I was part of a successful group, and I asked questions that were relative and well thought out.  I was familiar with the topics, the applications being talked about, and how the changes to the applications would affect all of us.As I was reading this survey, I realized most of my answers were “4’s” or “5’s”, a couple of “3’s” and only one “1”.  I went back and re-read my answers, and my only “1” was “To influence group members to change their behavior”.  I’ve been in one situation where someone kept receiving text messages, meeting after meeting and was asked to turn his phone off, but he never complied and it was very distracting.  The group decided rather than approach him verbally and tell him again, that whoever was speaking would be quiet until he was done with his text.  It was a non-confrontational way to handle the situation.
