Chevalier’s enthralling novel, Girl with a pearl Earring ingeniously fuses historical fact and fiction, inviting the reader into the volatile Vermeer household of seventeenth century Delft. Through Chevalier’s dutiful protagonist, Griet, the novel presents a gradual progression in her character, from a naпve adolescent indentured as a maid to the painter, Jan Vermeer, to a self-assured woman. Griet does not willingly accept her status, and she exploits Pieter, by taking advantage of his ability to distract her from Vermeer and conversely his ability to forge an alternate pathway in her life separate to that of the painter. Emotionally, Pieter offers Griet a stable relationship, which is never a reality with her Master. Though the butcher’s son becomes impatient and ’jealous of (Griet’s) master,’ she is not hasty to limit any pathways, nor the possibility of terminating her infatuation with Vermeer. She uses deceit to ensure that Pieter remains patient by let (ting) him do as he liked.’ Financially Pieter is ultimately regarded as an ‘escape’ and she is attracted to him for ‘the meat he could provide.’ Her ability to make adult decisions and take responsibility of her future and family prompts her to deceive other characters such as her husband Pieter the butcher’s son for personal growth.

Vermeer is a character that Griet regards as a potential financial provider, protector, liberator, who could offer her rights that any maid would be privileged to experience in the 17th century. Griet’s initial immaturity on entering the new environment leads to near disaster with her relationship with Vermeer.
