The Ultimate Guide to Greece Greece is a prominent nation, wealthy in culture and Beauty. The authentic and cultural heritage of Greece continues to resonate through out the modern western world in writing, art, rationality and politics. The nation is situated in the far south of the Balkan peninsula. Greece consolidates the towering mountains of the territory with more than 1,400 islands, the biggest of which is Crete. One of the five themes of Geography is location. Location in geography shows where something is located in a map, most often described using cardinal directions. The absolute location, or latitude and longitude of Greece is 31 degrees North, Latitude and 29 degrees East, longitude. Relative location is the location of a specific country in connection to other countries. Greece is South of Macedonia. Greece is Southwest of Albania. The nation is Southeast of Bulgaria and Istanbul. Relative location also includes the political boundaries, which is countries that border your country. Albania, Istanbul, and Bulgaria are Northeast of Greece. Macedonia is North of Greece. Place is another one of the five themes of geography. Place in geography talks about the physical or human characteristics of a place. Physical characteristics include things such as mountains, rivers, beaches. Human characteristics include things such as culture, housing, climate, etc. Greece is located in a Mediterranean region. Summers are typically sweltering and dry. Winters are typically cold and wet. The upper part can be exceptionally cool. During the winter, snow is uncommon. The south part has gentle winters and it snows. The capital city in Greece is Athens. Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities with it’s recorded history spanning over more than 3,400 years, and it’s earliest human presence starting between the 11th and 7th millennium B.C. Athens has, unique and splendid historic monuments. The population of Greece is 11.2 million. Some major religions practiced in Greece are Orthodox Christianity, Islam, and Irreligon. 98 percent of the Greek population is Christian Orthodox. 1.3 percent are Greek citizens of muslim religion. The rest of the population is Jewish, and Catholic. Some languages spoken in Greece are Greek, Turkish, and Albanian. Some landmarks or human features are the, Parthenon Temple, a temple built dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena Parthenos. Caldera Santorini is another landmark. According to Greeka.com “ Santorini’s half moon shaped bay is the center of the Caldera (a cauldron like volcanic depression) which collapsed after a volcanic eruption during the Minoan civilization. Some important physical features are Crete and Evia. The Greek island of Evia is also known as Euboia. It is Greece’s second largest island just after the big Island of Crete. The next theme geography is regions. The theme of geography considers, what areas have common characteristics. What is the history and what type of government is there? The topic discusses political information, tourist sites, and economy ( Jobs, selling and trading). Some regions within Greece are Athens, which is the capital city. The Peloponnese peninsula is another region within the nation. The Argo Saronic Island is an archipelago. The central and northern mainland are also regions within the nation. The Cyclades is a group of Islands which is a region in Greece. Crete is another region. The next theme of geography is Human Environment Interaction (HEI). This topic discusses the way people adapt to or change or depend on the environment. The themes also talk’s about clothing, housing, natural events such as disasters, bridges, tunnels, pollution, deforestation, and recycling. Some clothing people should wear when visiting Greece are loose fitted clothes, during the summer. During November, December, January, and February Greece can be colder and there is more rain and wind. You should wear or bring a light sweater and a raincoat, and make sure to bring an umbrella. Greece has had experienced a lot of natural disasters in the form of earthquakes. Some bridges in Greece include in the Arkadiko bridge, Bridge of Arta, Lake Polyfytos Bridge, and Rio- Antirrio bridge. There are many more bridges.
