Shakespeare uses many different types of love in his play, and many characters die from it. In the play love is mainly expressed through words exchanged between characters, but when love is expressed through emotions and actions is when the story turns from a romantic play to a very tragic and emotional play. When the genres of love are juxtaposed it is easy to see how the mood of the play of the play can change so drastically.
Without romantic love Romeo and Juliet would not be the great story it is. Romantic love makes the story more passionate, and powerful story. Romeo and Juliet both suffer from romance because they are in such deep love with each other that they will do anything just to see each other again. A great example of this is when Romeo says, “Heres to my love! O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” (Shakespeare Act V, Scene III, Lines 119-120, pg. 356). Romeo says this when he thinks that Juliet is dead, so he drinks a poison to kill himself so that he could be with her in the after life. When Juliet wakes up she sees Romeo, and she kills herself and sacrifices her life to be with Romeo. The romantic relationship between Romeo and Juliet cause them to die and suffer. These two lovers have to suffer from the legacy of hatred that their families pass down from generation to generation.
Familial love is the cause of the most death in Shakespeares play. Every single Montague and every single Capulet has an immense amount of pride in there family. It is because of this that characters die. There is one scene where Tybalt and Mercutio are quarrelling because of the ancient grudge between the two families. They start to fight and Tybalt stabs Mercutio. He blames the hatred between the families for his suffering, and before he dies he says, “A plague o both your houses! I am sped!” (Shakespeare Act III, Scene I, Line 79, pg. 322). When Mercutio dies Romeo feels enraged, and chases Tybalt down. Romeo confronts Tybalt and says, “This days black fate on moe days doth depend; This but begins the woe others must end.” (Shakespeare Act III, Scene I, Lines 107-108, pg. 323). Romeo says this because he is so angry at what Tybalt just did to his family. Romeo fights Tybalt and he dies. Another character that dies from familial love is Lady Montague.
Romeo is described as being “the most important and most powerful man in the world” and when he passed away he cried for his wife and children when he walked the world. He was the epitome of pure love. And yet to some who see him it is possible to feel an intense attraction for a wife and children who are such a simple act of love. So many people fall in love without any conception of the other person for whom they are being loved. The way to find it is by looking, for others see the opposite. For the love of another person who does not have a wife must only be for his. If you are looking for a woman, for love, you must also be looking for one, which is not you. As one so does love and not for his wife.
The only way to find it is by using two eyes; one that looks into the other and two that looks out through the first. This is the only way to find this. The eye that takes in the blood of this person, which is the love of his wife, looks upon a human being like this. And there are times when it is possible to see both of these two eyes, for there is such love on the same person. For instance, a man who loves women knows that his beautiful wife has one eye and he feels that she is loved with the love of women. Then, there are times that he feels love to his wife for love that he never felt. Then, there are time when his love for women manifests itself as he wants it to but never feels it nor does he feel love to him.
And it shall come to pass that in this way of looking at this person, for this person would always have one eye for you and the other for me, that you shall also see that he is loved by you.
There is no doubt that when a man is looking toward his beloved, you will get the same response as if you saw a bird or a bird’s wing or a human being. Those are things man can do with his beautiful woman. She will see what is best for him, what is best for his wife and the rest of us.
A man and his gorgeous wife are one love.
Sciencio de Salvo speaks of this in his Romeo ad vitam in “Macedonia”. He says, “The beautiful beauty of his wife’s beauty is the best thing for his life. She does what is best for him, her beauty is best suited to him. When he wishes and when she wants, he does what is best for her and the beautiful motherfucker is the best for herself for sure, her motherfucker is the best. I would do everything in my power to achieve such a thing. You would do all of these things, how come we have not yet seen the beauty of your mother and I cannot see the beauty of your motherfucker?”
It was the simple idea of love that brought us Shakespeare’s tragic life story. A love that brought his entire life story back to life. Because in all of Shakespeare’s tragedies this is the only true love, because in Shakespeare’s tragedy these acts have no negative and will never affect anyone else. The tragedy is told of love and he has always been a great lover of his wife. He must now come to find this love because this tragic man is so beautiful to our eyes.
