Even though many things technologically were advancing in 1990s, sports were as well. New records were set, as well as many new teams won and many lost. In these great years, football had many new things happening like on January fifteenth, 1991, Joe Montana set the NFLs record for postseason touchdowns with 30 and then 31(American Decades 1990-1999) , and with this, he broke Terry Bradshaws record. Later, Joe Montana announced his retirement from football in 1995. Another great event happened on November 19, 1992, when Jerry Rice, wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, caught his one hundredth touchdown pass. As for the Super Bowl side of this decade, it was the Denver Broncos who won the Super Bowl against the Falcons in 1998. In football it was not just the pros making huge strides but also college teams as well. This was shown on November 13, 1993 when the University of Notre Dame, the Fighting Irish, who were ranked number two in the nation at the time, took on the number one ranked Florida State Seminoles. The fighting Irish would take this one home with a final score of 31-24.

Moving on, baseball had its share of events as well. One of these happened on July 17, 1990 when the Minnesota Twins became the first major league baseball team to record two triple plays in one game (enotes.com). On August 17, 1990, Carlton Fisk of the Chicago White Sox hit his 329th home run as a catcher, a major league baseball record. He ended his career in 1993 with 376 home runs. The next year, in 1991 on July 28th, Dennis Martinez pitched a perfect game for the Montreal Expos against the Los Angles Dodgers, winning the game two to zero. Lastly, for the decade of the 1990s, the Yankees won the World Series 3 times.

Another sport making progress and setting goals was the NHL, also known as the National Hockey League. One team had their moment on June 14. This team was the New York Rangers who had won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1940.

Now everything was going great in those sports but there were events happening in the NBA as well. One of these events happened when on April 18, 1991; John Stockton broke his own NBA season assist record at 1,136. In 1996, the NBA championship went to the Chicago Bulls, who ended up defeating Seattle four games to two in the finals. When it was time to select the MVPs, Michael Jordan, with the Bulls, won the award in 1996. As for college athletics, Duke University won back to back NCAA championships in 1991 and 1992. In 1993 it was North Carolinas turn to win the title. Now skipping ahead a couple of years to 1997, it was the Arizona Wildcats turn to win the title for Tucson.

Lastly, a final sport to talk about in the later 90s was NASCAR. This racing sport has had its ups and down but some of the major events were Jeff Gordon repeating as NASCAR Winston Cup Champion, but Dale Earnhardt had his revenge in winning the Daytona
