Good Will Hunting is a well developed film that consists of several underlying themes that account for the success of the film as a whole. It stars Matt Damon as Will Hunting, a mathematical genius who is employed as a janitor at the well-acclaimed Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is what one would consider “riffraff.” He roams the street with his 3 best friends, Chuckie Sullivan, Billy McBride, and Morgan OMally. One would most likely wonder why he does not put his genius to good use and why does he lest such talent go to waste. We have to realize that perhaps what we consider a waste, he considers to be most-fulfilling. Now we begin to consider the various aspects of his life and the impediments holding him back from achieving his full potential. Loss, failure, and potential are all barriers in Will Huntings life but the most exigent barrier stopping Will is fear.

Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of life in general; what is it that makes a man tick? For Will Hunting, it is an amalgamation all of those and more. As a child he suffered a tremendous amount of abuse, had nobody to call his own, and witnessed a side of the world children should by no means be exposed to. Although Will never attempted to utilize his talent for good, the extraordinary genius within him feels trapped and therefore, as Sean mentions, of all the places to work as a janitor, he selects MIT. There as he cleans, he proves theorems that mathematical experts themselves have trouble solving. Professor Lambeau discovers the rare genius trapped within Will and exhorts Will to do more with it. However, he fails to sense the fears detaining Will and finds himself perturbed.

Fear of loss is Wills largest obstruction. As a child, he lost everything. He however did acquire a group of friends whose combined intellect couldnt hold a candle to his. They stand
