Generational Myth
GENERATIONAL MYTH
Siva Vaidhyanathan has written “Generational Myth” to announce the argument about “digital
generation” and to refuse the existence of such a generation. According to all professors, experts
and pop cultures, a generation so-called “digital generation” is growing up and universities,
jobs are full of many young people who are described as “digital”. In “Generational Myth”, there
is Gomez’s notation about that, “… an entire generation of Digital Natives — kids
who have grown up with the Internet, and are accustomed to the entire world being only a mouse
click away …”(Gomez, 2008) According to Gomez’s implication, all of these young have the
same characteristics about using of digital tools. However, Vaidhyanathan defends that, in both
of private and public universities, there are many students having variable properties about
ability to use digital tools properly and purchasing power to receive digital tools. Thus,
Vaidhyanathan supports that this generation unables to be called as “digital generation”.
First of Vaidhyanathan’s causes of refusal the digital definition, all students should not be
assumed same about usage of digital tools. There are many different ways and purposes of using
digital world, like listening to music with a compact disc, blogging and sharing various things
online
