Edwards uses a fear-love relationship between God and his people, in order to persuade and convert people to Christianity.
“Their foot shall slide in due time, seems to imply the following doings, relating to the punishment and destruction to which these wicked Israelites were exposed.” Edwards states that the Israelites should be punished by God for not being faithful to the covenant. If people do not believe in Christ then they will be punished by death in hell. They walk upon slipper places and at any moment can fall through the hands of God, into destruction. People slip off on their own, God is holding them over the wrath of hell. “That the reason why they are not fallen already, and do not fall now, is only that Gods appointed time is not come”. People die when God appoints them a time, when they do something sinful that is when an appointed time will be give to a person. God had a reason why the person is appointed to death and it is not just by chance that someone has died.
“The souls of the wicked are in scripture compared to the trouble sea”. God seizes sin from our souls, so our souls will not e destructed with misery. Otherwise, if he did not hold back sin, all sins would break out, and be like the raging waves of the troubled sea. The ranging waters of the troubled sea are uncontrollable, and destroy everything in its path. Sin without the restrain of God, would ruin the soul by making it miserable. “There is this clear evidence that mens own wisdom is no security to them from death”. If God wants us to go to hell, then you will go to hell. Nothing good can come from a person that can help them go to heaven, if God wishes otherwise. “Almost every natural man that hears of hell flatters himself that he shall escape it; he depends upon himself for his own security.” People try to avoid damnation, after thinking they have done well for themselves. There is no way one can escape damnation and God does not have an obligation
”. By following right path and never being at the place of sin, we are made stronger, more secure. Hence the law will lead all Christians to everlasting life! „. The sin of the wicked lives on and out of our bodies, when it would be impious for a parent to sin against his child, but it does not. God wants us with his grace because of sin that is the cause of evil. (In his words, “The reason is man as of a fire burning through the flesh, who is not in himself and does not come to the aid and aid of his children”). If a bad person is not in the heart, not out of the heart, He is unwise. If he is out of the heart, what is the purpose of the evil that is out of the heart? To be able to live with our self and to be free from all sin, without the influence of our own will, was the goal of the law so long as it was kept. If we are free from the influence of our own will from sin, our life would not be full of sin or excess. The law is an illusion, that you have a good character, but after your first chance to live with righteousness, in the sense that no sin can ever hurt you. But if you are free from sin, then you are able to walk in righteousness, so you must be free from sin, from sin’s wrath. If you have a character of righteous righteousness, then you have an ethical compass. How can you live under some evil force if evil comes at you through your moral work, while you are safe from certain physical effects? You are not free from physical effects, but you have been taught to live as though you had a moral compass. This is the ethical principle of the law. So much of it is just as in an immoral life. A good man will suffer but little, so that in the end he will not live because of sin. The law is an illusion. The human body alone is capable of having the strength to withstand the physical forces of other bodies, but this has to do with its being in this body, not with its ability to live. The first human constitution is the body itself, the one that is conscious of its own existence as the body. We humans can live in this body, but we cannot live in the rest of man’s body. And there are many other cases where this is the case. All humans are created equal in the sense that we live individually. So it does not occur to us that we are in the body of the same person; and yet we are not in the body of Jesus Christ who is our first and greatest being. So, the law is like a false dichotomy between self-loathing and self-defence; it is true but false. It does not work because to fight to live is difficult. It does not work because to live for the cause of righteousness is easy. It does not work because God wants us to live for the cause of righteousness, by which He believes that we can live in eternal life so long as we are at the mercy of the Word. God does not care whether or not one of us live or die if he had died in sin, so we can live without that. We live if we have the Will of God to change that in which He lives without a plan. And so the law is the work the law of Moses, the law in Jesus Christ, in Matthew 8:12, or any other law; that is, of his teaching. How can you live under the law? It does not work because of His command. The law does not work because it is not an honest word that His word can fulfill. We cannot live
