Six Billion and Counting
Global population is a growing controversial issue in society today. Some people believe that children are gifts from God and others believe that the population should be controlled by humans. Media information tells us that it is an urgent issue that needs to be taken control of very soon.

The Global population is growing at a tremendous rate. It is estimated that between 2000 and 2050, the population will triple. It took from the beginning of human history to 1850 to reach a total population of one billion. “The main reason for this growth is a decrease in the death rate, which has been lowered by advances in medicine, public health and food production” according to an article in World News Digest quoting the World Almanac.

It is felt by certain people that our government needs to step in and take action. “In 1995, 97% of the earths population growth occurred in the worlds developing countries.” The other thought is that laws need to be set in those countries allowing each woman to bear only two children, limiting population. Once the limit of two children has occurred, she or her husband is then sterilized so that she is unable to have any more children. If our government were to do that, it would help to stabilize our population enormously.

The concern is if we do not address this issue soon, then we will be facing some major consequences later on such as food, and water shortages. Experts in this area believe that “The list of potential consequences of this expansive growth is long: water shortages, environmental degradation, conflicts over dwindling resources, pollution and an exhaustion of the food supply are just a few.” If this issue is ignored, then we are
