In France, many of the judicial situations and traveling entertainers utilized the spoken vernacular of romance. The romance vernacular developed from people writing down stories as they heard them told by the traveling musicians (Tillotson, 2005). Germany began using vernacular as around the eighth century. Attempts to convert to other languages failed numerous times. During the 12th century many of the French stories had been translated in to the German language and the language caught on.

The development of the languages of French, English and German followed the fall of the Roman Empire and the decline of Latin. The languages change greatly during the course of the middle ages, and there were many vernacular variances within each of them. Due to the influence of Alfred the Great, England returned to using old English. Under his reign many of the books including religious pieces were written in old English. English had many dialects incorporated in it during this time period. The vernacular language depended on the social class and English was most commonly used by lower class citizens (Tillotson, 2005).
